James Stannage pushed the boundaries, upset the Independent Broadcasting Authority + created a compulsive radio format on Piccadilly Radio where he insulted the listeners (who curiously seemed to love it) long after the BBC had gone to bed. Risky, dangerous but mostly funny. RIP.

We continue to have discussions with Preston Bus, the Reform-run transport authority LCC are considering more cuts…
Preston Labour@prestonlabour

A note from Deputy Leader Martyn Rawlinson following his meeting with Preston Bus; Preston is experiencing the worst of all worlds when it comes to bus services. Deregulation by the Thatcher government in the 1980’s (effectively privatisation) left council-run buses and co-ops (like Preston Bus) open to aggressive takeovers by profiteers. Preston’s size, geography and population (despite growth) doesn’t quite support the kind of services you find in Manchester and Liverpool, not without considerable subsidy or risk-taking to change habits from cars. Devolution could help but that in itself is a lottery in terms of who is in charge, their priorities and how it is all sliced up. To be fair to Preston Bus, there have been improvements to both the services and the infrastructure of their business. However, when you think that they are in receipt of subsidies from at least two government streams, LCC and even some developer contributions from planning applications, the mind boggles on what it would take for Preston to have an effective, affordable bus service! The last government banned Councils starting bus services. This has been reversed but after years of funding cuts, which councils can afford the multi-millions required to get back in the game? Municipalisation or nationalisation are the preferred options but don’t seem to be on the cards. The alternative is a single national private operator who could run it cheaper - but corporate strangleholds are rarely good. As I said, the worst of all worlds. Preston Labour will consider options. Main points; *PB say that the £3.50 fare is currently necessary due to being short-changed on the £3 fare cap scheme. Companies operating on bigger footprints can cross-subsidise. Not ruling out re-joining. *School buses were losing money and all overheads have risen, (so basically, subsidy required to make these more affordable but the transport authority, LCC, refuse) *Other Rotala services in other areas have faced similar challenges but the big cities fare better with more passengers and subsidised travel schemes, (so Preston and Lancashire penalised for not having a Mayor and regional governance) *Cross-service multi-tickets currently do not work financially for Preston Bus as the other main operator is working on a different level in terms of scale (so they would likely be short-changed again) *Acknowledged that £3.50 for very short journeys is problematic and will look at what can be done *Real-time info is coming back this year *Child fare is now up to, and including 18 years of age *Acknowledged importance of good quality, reliable services, especially first/last bus that people rely on *20 new buses with more electric buses to follow (3 at once?) *More frequent buses on busiest routes

I was delighted to be invited to the Family Easter Egg Assembly at Deepdale Primary School, #Preston to present prizes to Year 5 and 6 winners and their families. The entries were very creative and imaginative and it’s great to hear that the competition is open to pupils and their families to create a 2D or 3D entry. The entries were ‘egg’ceptional and this annual event has become a much-loved part of the school calendar. Well done to everyone who took part in the The Big PNE Sleep Out over the weekend, including members of my staff team who took part for the first time this year. Homelessness is still a concerning issue locally and official statistics from Autumn 2025 indicates that the largest regional increase was in the North West, rising from 367 in 2024 to 441 in 2025 - an increase of 20%. In recent months, I have led campaigns about tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), so it was timely that this year’s sleep-out was about the rising tide of women’s homelessness in #Preston. So far, my office has raised over £900 and these funds will go directly to the Foxton and PNECET initiatives that work with women and girls across the city. Over 200 participants slept overnight in 3°C at PNE football stadium and over £57,000 has been raised in total. There is still time to donate: justgiving.com/page/mark-hend… Thank you for your support! @TheFoxtonCentre

I’m delighted and honoured to officially open the new Lumo Headquarters in #Preston, ahead of their frequent and low-cost rail services between London and Stirling in Scotland. This is a very exciting development for our City. The new rail hub will bring jobs for local people, quality apprenticeships, low-cost rail fares, more route options and better connectivity between London, Scotland and other key West Coast destinations. The opening event featured a Caribbean themed carnival, a tour the new Lumo HQ and an opportunity to meet some of their newest recruits who will be working on the route. By basing themselves in Preston, as an anchor hub between London and Scotland, I expect a very positive knock-on effect to the local economy. This is great news for leisure and business passengers and I hope this development will attract businesses to move their operations to Preston. I look forward to seeing increased growth in the open access operator model in the UK rail industry and wholeheartedly welcome Lumo to our City. @LumoTravel

Sad news: Former Labour minister Phil Woolas, MP for Oldham West & Saddleworth 1997-2010, has died from brain cancer, aged 66. Popular at Westminster & famous for live TV clash with Gurkhas’ champion Joanna Lumley in 2009.

Members of my team attended the BT Openreach community event at Deepdale this week. The event brought together, for the first time, several BT Group community programmes made possible through improved digital connectivity. Throughout the day, they showcased; STEM Partnerships with local schools, employability support for young people aged 11-14, and digital skills training for adults aged 55+. In Preston, there is 75% coverage of Openreach's Full Fibre (FTTP) network with the highest coverage in the west of the City (90.5%) and the lowest coverage in the Ribbleton area at just 58.2% The BT Group are also working with government backing on Project Gigabit, a programme to enable the hardest-to-reach communities to access lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband. Check if full fibre broadband is available for your address here: gov.uk/guidance/check…

Tony Blair’s support for US Presidents’ Middle Eastern interventions regardless of long term consequences has always seemed messianic & maniacal to me. It severely damaged his reputation before & may well do so again. Name plate says it all…

I’m supporting International Women’s Day which this year is on Sunday 8 March 2026. The theme for this year is ‘Give to Gain’. I am very proud to work alongside many women-led organisations in Preston that deal with women’s issues, most recently inviting them to Parliament to hear about the ‘Digital Exploitation of Women and Girls’ and the government’s response to the issues raised. This is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, and there are local events in #Preston to mark this special occasion. Saturday 7th March - Share her Story - Friends of Edith Rigby , Central Methodist Church, 11am-4pm internationalwomensday.com/Activity/21889… Saturday 7th March - Anatomy Health & Wellness Fair, University of Lancashire, 12pm-4pm eventbrite.co.uk/e/internationa… 8th March - Share her Story at the Harris, Harris Museum, 11.30am-3.30pm theharris.org.uk/product/intern… 6-8 March - Weekend live music events (various), The Ferret, theferret.live

I have written to the Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper MP, about the current volatile situation in Iran and Middle Eastern Countries. I have called for clarification on: 1. The use of UK facilities, personnel or intelligence to facilitate offensive operations. 2. If there are plans for any further UK involvement, and if so, if this is within the legal framework and subject to oversight. If you or anyone you know is affected by the ongoing situation, please refer to the FCDO guidance detailed on my webpage at: prestonmp.co.uk/post/urgent-ad…

Urgent Advice for TransPennine customers affected by flight disruptions: ‘We are extending temporary ticket easements for customers travelling to and from Manchester Airport until 23:59 on Sunday 8 March 2026, following disruption to flights serving parts of the Middle East. Travel advice Due to ongoing disruption affecting flights to and from the region, customers travelling to Manchester Airport for flights to Middle Eastern destinations, including the UAE (Dubai), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq and Iran, are being advised not to travel. Customers returning on earlier or later than scheduled flights from the region are advised that ticket restrictions have been lifted on all TransPennine Express services from Manchester Airport until Sunday 8 March. Customers with proof of affected travel from the Middle East may travel on any TransPennine Express service, regardless of whether they hold a valid ticket for that specific service. Our teams will provide appropriate assistance to ensure customers can complete their journeys. Customers whose flights have been cancelled or amended and who are advised not to travel to the airport should seek a refund from their original point of purchase. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide further updates if required.’

@henrywinter These are not set-piece corners, they are authorised wrestling matches taking place in the opponents box, such that if they were happening anywhere else on the pitch would result in bookings or sendings off.

Game, set-piece and match. Again. Huge result for Arsenal. Never mind the quality, feel the quantity of points - all that matters for them. Even down to 10, Chelsea a threat. Raya immense. Again. Arsenal showed their resilience, showed their threat at corners. Again. #ARSCHE
