PAID MATERNITY LEAVE DROPS SHARPLY
The proportion of South African employers offering four months of fully paid maternity leave has fallen sharply, dropping from 58.5% in 2023 to 41.7% in 2025, according to Remchannel’s latest Employee Benefits Guide.
The decline comes amid changing parental leave regulations following a Constitutional Court ruling that supports shared parental leave, expanding the potential cost burden for employers as both parents become eligible for leave benefits.
Remchannel Managing Director Lindiwe Sebesho (pictured) says companies are now reviewing employee benefits more carefully as they adapt to shifting legal and financial realities.
Further changes may be on the horizon, with draft labour law amendments published in February 2026 proposing a unified shared parental leave framework.
