I do not think the average movie goes is smart enough to understand The Backrooms. That's not even to say the Backrooms is like really high brow, a lot of those niggas are just genuinely dumb 😭

@maywrence @roastchili They were probably the right audience for it, and I’m glad it got them into a genre. As far as I and many others are concerned, the association with brainrot content is too strong to ignore.

The wikidot backrooms community is the cornerstone that singlehandedly made the concept as popular as it is. Kane's series likely wouldn't even exist without it and yet people continue endlessly disrespecting it.

@Argenpone @roastchili Arguably the latter is easier to reccomend because they're usually shorter and accessible and I know a lot of people who got into horror specifically because of stuff like SCP, just saying

@maywrence @roastchili That’s true, I guess. Walke up to me and say “you should read this scifi novel” my mind would go to laser guns and aliens, as that’s the most common interpretation. If you say “you should read this backrooms wiki article”, my mind would go to lower quality stuff instead.

To me, so far, it just sounds snobby, because all you're basically saying is that you and other people aren't open minded enough to be able to give a proper chance to these communities

For example if children of time was an scp entry about spider civilization. And if it would affect your opinion on them, why

@maywrence @roastchili I’ll spell it out further: “Novels aren’t the only respectable way to share your writing” I’ve read hundreds of novels, ranging from excellent (ex, Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky) to atrocious (ex, Shadow of the conqueror by Shad M Brooks). Is that clearer?

Because if you're trying to speak on respectable writing, I'd like to know how well versed you are in the writing you do respect

@maywrence @roastchili And by “kane’s work getting buried in the wiki” I mean that if he had tried to merge his vision with the shared one on the wiki the result would’ve been significantly worse for it. Twitter’s character limit makes it rather hard to fit everything I’m trying to say.

@maywrence @roastchili The main point I’m making is that it’s clear that “good” writers in these projects are usually better off cutting ties with it and trying to cut their own path out. Which is precisely what Kane did, instead of letting it get buried under the rest of the wikidot.

@Argenpone @roastchili I really don't know how else to word this, but you sound like a snob. And I'm also wondering how many novels you actually read since you're suggesting it should be one of the only respectable ways for writers to share their work.

@maywrence @roastchili And just like SCP, the type of writers it attracts aren’t exactly good. If the “hidden gems” in collaborative projects dominated by kiddy stuff aren’t as popular then those good writers should take their skills somewhere where it can shine, like writing an actual novel.

@roastchili @Argenpone The wiki is not a body of work made by a single person, it is many people writing indipendently creating a wider world, meaning that just like SCP quality varies, a lot.

@maywrence @Argenpone Okay but the wiki is genuinely poorly written even when compared to SCP, which while capable of making bangers is still obviously amateur. Backrooms wiki is closer to Wattpad.

@Argenpone I’m not particularly a fan but even just glancing at it there’s a lot of genuinely creative concepts that would be cool to be expanded upon. The only reason you see the kiddy stuff is because that’s what gets views

@maywrence People disrespect it because it’s a SCP foundation knockoff mainly contributed to by children. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying stuff like that while growing up but you should eventually seek out and produce better quality stuff to scratch the creative itch.

@OakWoodAnims And the 4chan post only expanded in popularity due to people forming a fandom around it and making it widespread. Kane himself said the first time he'd seen it was on instagram or youtube.

@maywrence Kane didnt even know about the wikidot backrooms when making his stuff. He knew about the 4chan post, that’s about it.
