🌧️ Review of March 2026 Rainfall and Temperature Performance The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has released the April 2026 Climate Outlook, which includes a detailed review of the just-concluded March 2026 — the onset month of the March-April-May (MAM) 2026 Long Rains season. Rainfall Review for March 2026: Rainfall was recorded over most parts of the country. The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Nairobi, and parts of the South-eastern lowlands started receiving rains from the second week of February, while the rest of the country experienced onset in the second and third weeks of March. Overall, above-normal rainfall was received in most areas compared to the Long-Term Mean (LTM), except in Mandera and Voi where near-normal rainfall was recorded. Notable high rainfall amounts included: • Kitaingo (Makueni County): 587.6 mm • Kasikeu (Makueni County): 537.9 mm • Kabete: 529.1 mm • Kisii: 496.9 mm The month was marked by severe storms with heavy downpours exceeding 100 mm in 24 hours in many stations, including 160 mm recorded at Wilson Airport (Nairobi) on 6th March. Temperature Review for March 2026: • Maximum (daytime) temperatures were cooler than average across the entire country, with large negative anomalies in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western regions. • Minimum (night-time) temperatures were warmer than average over most stations, though some highland areas (e.g., Nyahururu and Laikipia Air Base) occasionally recorded lows below 10°C. • Mean temperatures were generally cooler than average in several parts, with the highest negative anomaly of -1.2°C recorded in Kisumu. These conditions set the stage for the peak rainfall expected in April. 📥 Download the full document (April 2026 Outlook with March Review): meteo.go.ke/documents/3140… Stay updated with our daily, weekly, and monthly climate products. #March2026Review #LongRains2026 #KenyaClimate #MAM2026 #MeteoKenya #KMSA

An expansive dust storm has swept across the Sahara. Forming a front of ~2,000 km long, the storm travelled from the south of Algeria all the way to the Canary Islands, disrupting transport routes and affecting air quality across West and North Africa.

Today, I joined fellow Principal Secretaries for the third monthly meeting of PSs chaired by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Mr. @koske_felix, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre. The meeting provided a valuable platform for stock-taking on government programmes and strengthening inter-agency coordination as guided by the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Preparations are in top gear as Kenya gets ready to host the global observance of Desertification and Drought Day in partnership with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification under the theme “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.” At the same time, preparations are also underway for the 11th Our #OceanConference to be held in Mombasa County and Kilifi County, focusing on advancing a sustainable blue economy, strengthening marine protection, and addressing climate change under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future.” The engagement further strengthened collaboration across sectors to ensure that environmental sustainability remains central to Kenya’s development pathway under BETA. #DeliveringThePlan #ServiceDelivery #ClimateAction

In its latest State of the Global Climate report, @WMO shows that 2015–2025 were the hottest 11 years on record, with heat stress affecting people of all ages on every continent. Workers are especially vulnerable: around one-third of the global workforce (1.2 billion people) is exposed to workplace heat risk each year. Rising temperatures affect health in many ways, increasing fatigue, injuries, dehydration, kidney strain and mental stress. According to @Lancet Countdown data, heat-related deaths have surged by 63% since the 1990s. As a driver of our warming world, climate change also amplifies public health risks such as vector- and water-borne diseases. @WHO works closely with @WMO to address the impacts of climate change on health systems—including extreme heat—by strengthening health facility readiness to cope with higher temperatures. @WHO calls on governments to ensure that heat early warning systems are tailored to the needs of the health sector and that climate information is integrated into health decision-making. Every heat-related death is preventable.
