🇪🇺 The best story in European football this season. 🇨🇭 In the small, sleepy Swiss town of Thun, something extraordinary has happened. 🏆 A club who'd never won a major trophy are runaway league champions. This is how. 🎁 Free to read on @TheAthleticFC nytimes.com/athletic/72467…

In the 128-year history of FC Thun they had never won a major trophy. The town has a population of under 45,000. They were only promoted back to the Swiss top flight last season. And now they are champions. @anantaajith and @Millar_Colin on arguably this season's greatest European football story. 🔗 nyti.ms/48Hc8zg

@NateDiceDesire Yes, and that January window when Heaven and Dorgu was signed clearly very successful too. Equally important has been identified which players shouldn't be at the club either. Think that was Amorim's most positive contribution, actually.

@Millar_Colin Our recruitment last season was largely successful, so I'm hopeful that this summer we will target the right players again. Just need to know if that's for Carrick or someone else.

Fine to debate wider context around Michael Carrick at Manchester United but can't argue with 22 points from 8 games against top-half opponents, including wins v City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa and Chelsea. Took over with team 7th but qualified for UCL with three games remaining.

@84rebmuN Sure, but that's the only measurement you've got. United have clearly become a lot better under him. It may be volatile and can change quickly, but he has clearly done a very good job in the circumstances.

@Millar_Colin He's only managed in one competition with the odd injury here or there to contend with. I'd like see him get the job.

@NateDiceDesire Yes, its incredibly competitive but I think Manchester United have always had a really, really strong starting XI that's very close to the best in the league. But there are serious shortcomings beyond that XI and with European football next season, there needs to be signings.

@Millar_Colin Given the narrative around the club for that first half of the season, to think we are likely to finish third is an indictment on the other "big teams" this season who have had their troubles.

@baldricks_plan Yes, and winning - with a clean sheet - at Stamford Bridge without four first-choice centre-backs is clearly an impressive result despite the context of opponents.

@Millar_Colin Also, these victories (barring Chelsea) were with excellent performances. Including today I feel.

@TeclabYousef My take is the head coach is important, but much less important than say, continuing to make good signings. Someone who can command respect from players, build a strong coaching team around him and tone down noise off the pitch is what's important for him.

@Millar_Colin Outstanding second half of the season. Inflection point for Sir Jim & Co this summer. - Do they stick with Carrick or twist? - Can they reinforce all of the holes in the squad for the summer?

@_YCCM A big part of it - that is not really discussed - is how he turns down the noise off the pitch. He is - entirely intentionally - boring in press conferences and interviews. After the few seasons before him, that was essential.

Dutch football is bracing itself for a court decision on Monday the Dutch FA warns could mean 133 Eredivisie games need to be replayed. This is 'paspoortgate', and the chaos it could bring in the Netherlands. 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 on @TheAthleticFC. nytimes.com/athletic/72462…

@jimdwan @TheTotallyShow @MattDaviesAdams Hey James, Chris Wood's return was mentioned - going two up top with Igor Jesus - by Daniel Storey immediately before this segment on the full podcast. So the 'systematic change' was Wood/Jesus up top, Gibbs-White moving further left/less central in attacking moves.

From managing just one goal from 88 shots to putting 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 past Burnley and 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 past Sunderland... It's fair to say Forest have found their form at just the right time under Vitor Pereira ⚽️🌳 @Millar_Colin

@Johannisnotcool @PhilipC365 Because the original Martinez decision was based on removing context and boiled down to contact with hair - I think that could be applied to this incident too. The premise is trying to maintain that consistency makes no sense, but PGMO used that criteria.

@Millar_Colin @PhilipC365 Sorry Colin, but if they’re “obviously not identical” according to you, then why are you using this incident as an example? Surely you know & understand why it wasn’t called as a red card?

Noticing that "hair pulls are automatically a red card for violent conduct and three-match ban, and those are simply the rules" has been abandoned to "play on, no free-kick" within less than two weeks.

@PhilipC365 But all these incidents are different, hence why rulings grouping then together is problematic. Pulling/touching is an arbitrary difference between the two incidents, both touch an opponent's hair that causes that hair to move back. Both are slight and incidental.

@Millar_Colin Hair pulling is not the same as hair touching. The latter has nothing to do with whether you get an automatic red for the former, regardless of force or intent. Meanwhile, some even worse whataboutism here x.com/BarcaFem/statu…

🗣️ José Barcala (Bayern Munich coach) on Franziska Kett’s red card: “It’s unfair because Salma [Paralluelo] has very long hair and there was no intent. My player was trying to grab her shirt. It should have been a yellow card.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
