👱‍♀️ Meet Alice, a final-year PhD candidate at Monash who just submitted her thesis last month! ➗ Alice’s research explores the range of factors shaping how EAL students learn mathematics with instructional videos, such as lecture recordings in higher education. Her findings offer valuable insights for teaching practice, video design, and future theoretical development. 🔬 Alice’s journey reflects an interdisciplinary path across science and education. She began with a Bachelor of Biomedicine (Neuroscience) at the University of Melbourne, followed by a Master’s in Vision Science. Alongside her studies, she taught and coached hundreds of international students which sparked her passion for teaching. She completed a Master of Teaching, worked as a mathematics lecturer, and later led digital learning projects during COVID-19, which inspired her to pursue a PhD at Monash. Alice has presented at international conferences, received awards, contributed to research projects and published several papers. 🇨🇳 Alice was born in Guangzhou and having spent the past 20 years in Melbourne, she calls both cities home: one where her story began, and the other where she has grown into herself. 🎶 Beyond academia, Alice is also a UX designer, videographer, and singer-songwriter. Her latest Mandarin single Meridian (子午线) was released this month and is out on many platforms including Spotify under the name AliceYyyyyu. ☺️ We wish Alice the very best in her future endeavours. @AliceY0000

Ruth Fielding from Monash Education recently addressed the House Standing Committee on Education’s Inquiry into Building Asia Capability in Australia through the education system and beyond. She shared research-informed insights on effective bilingual schooling, highlighting the importance of leadership commitment, sustained resourcing and ongoing professional learning to support teachers and embed language and culture across school life. Ruth emphasised that building “Asia capability” starts with intercultural understanding, and one of the most effective ways to develop this is through learning an additional language. High-quality bilingual programs not only engage students, but can also support strong academic outcomes when embedded as a core part of school culture. The session generated strong engagement from the Committee, with thoughtful questions and discussion underscoring the relevance of this work to Australia’s education future. Monash Education's Stephanie Wescott reflects on the Victorian teacher strike yesterday in the latest Monash LENS article. She says "The strike in Victoria should not be understood as a failure of teacher dedication. It should be understood as a refusal to keep honouring a social bargain that has always been deeply unequal and unjust". Read the article here: lens.monash.edu/we-treat-teach…
