A new Science study shows that Earth's severe Cryogenian glaciations catalyzed a pivotal shift in the evolution and diversity of early eukaryotes during the Proterozoic eon. The work underscores the interplay between Earth’s environmental perturbations and the evolutionary trajectories of early life. scim.ag/401cfS8

Very sad to hear this news. Dr. Diane Griffin was an inspirational leader and scientist who was a pioneer in virology. She paved the way for other women to pursue and succeed in science. She will be sorely missed. Her legacy will live on 💐

Mourning the loss of Dr. Diane Griffin, who passed away on Monday. Dr. Griffin was a founding member of @CMM_JHU and chaired our advisory board. A distinguished virologist, she was an elected member of Natl Acad Sci and Natl Acad Med. We remember her with gratitude.

BREAKING NEWS The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPeacePrize to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo. This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the peace prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again. #NobelPrize

The 2024 #NobelPrize laureates in chemistry Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have successfully utilised artificial intelligence to predict the structure of almost all known proteins. In 2020, Hassabis and Jumper presented an AI model called AlphaFold2. With its help, they have been able to predict the structure of virtually all the 200 million proteins that researchers have identified. Since their breakthrough, AlphaFold2 has been used by more than two million people from 190 countries. Among a myriad of scientific applications, researchers can now better understand antibiotic resistance and create images of enzymes that can decompose plastic. This year’s medicine laureates Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun studied a relatively unassuming 1 mm long roundworm, C. elegans. Despite its small size, C. elegans possesses many specialised cell types such as nerve and muscle cells also found in larger, more complex animals, making it a useful model for investigating how tissues develop and mature in multicellular organisms. Read how the 2024 medicine laureates’ investigations into C. elegans revealed an entirely new dimension to gene regulation: bit.ly/4dlPE6f #NobelPrize

MicroRNA genes have evolved and expanded within the genomes of multicellular organisms for over 500 million years. Today, we know that there are more than a thousand genes for different microRNAs in humans, and that gene regulation by microRNA – discovered by this year’s medicine laureates – is universal among multicellular organisms. #NobelPrize
