“Growing up in a traditional environment where women were expected to remain silent, I persisted in questioning and seeking answers. I aim to break societal norms and inspire others to do the same.” -Tiffiya Samuel, Dallas College student. Read her emotional and inspiring story below: Can you share about your journey from India to Dallas College? "I am an international student. I came from India when I was in middle school. Adapting to a new country with a new language that I didn’t speak was a challenge. It wasn't until after high school that I was able to start speaking with people and bettering my English. That’s when I decided to come to Dallas College instead of remaining in home school. That was a hard choice, but my grandfather was my inspiration. Before he passed away, I promised to pursue education and become the first woman in our family to achieve that." Could you share more about your grandfather and how he influenced you? "My grandfather was my role model. He was always there for me growing up. He provided unwavering support and motivation for me. He always encouraged me and made sure I was focused on school, even when he was battling cancer. His words as a farmer stuck with me: 'Like a plant, start as a seed deep in the darkness of the soil, and with the sun and nourishment, come forth from that darkness and become a plant that gives back to the world.' Dallas College has been my sun and my nourishment so far." Why did you choose a nursing major? "Caring for my grandfather during his battle with cancer and a calling to serve the community led me to nursing. I want to provide care for the less fortunate, influenced by the lack of resources that affected my family back in India. This is a way for me to give back to the community." What is the biggest challenge you’ve overcome? "Growing up in a traditional environment where women were expected to remain silent, I persisted in questioning and seeking answers. I aim to break societal norms and inspire others to do the same. Despite discouraging remarks about my gender, and societal norms, I remained resolute. My recent election as the vice president of SGA and nomination for Student of the Year is a testament to my determination even though certain people from my community disagreed with me joining this association as a woman and my slogan of ‘empower, enlighten, girl boss.’" What legacy do you aim to leave behind? "I want to be known as someone who emerged from darkness and embraced the light, never to regress. My goal is to pave the way for others, like my grandfather did for me." #WeAreDallasCollege

"I came at 8 years old to the United States from Mexico. I'm a first-generation student.   It was really a struggle. I used to cry a lot whenever I didn't understand, or I was really frustrated when I didn't understand my teachers. That would make me really sad, so my mom would have to move me from schools. We found a bilingual class for me that I felt more comfortable in and then from there, I started learning English. When I was in high school, our teachers helped us get into college, and they advised us to take our basic courses and the most courses that we could at a community college because it's less expensive - a four-year college will be harder and more expensive. It's also hard sometimes whenever your parents don’t know a lot of things college students should know, and so the advice, I have to get it from my friends or from my professors or other family members. My future plans are to get married, have a family — a big, big family — and have a cafe with my degree. I would like to advise people, especially those who suffer from diabetes, heart disease and things like that. People could enjoy healthy meals, and if they wanted nutrition advice, they could get help with that too."  #EveryStudentIsAStory

“Growing up, my mom always burned the bacon...when I was just seven, I said I thought I could do it better than her, and I just did it.” - Tairan Lockett, Dallas College Culinary student. Read his full interview (and his thoughts on pineapple on pizza) below. Can you share your story leading up to where you are today? “So, it all started with a challenge from my mom to cook breakfast when I was just seven. I said I thought I could do it better than her, and I just did it. Since then, I've been on a journey to express myself through food, exploring different avenues to become a chef. The turning point was discovering my love for the science of cooking, leading me to Dallas College and beyond. Now I want to be a food research chef. I love to learn the 'why' behind food.” Your curiosity about the "why" in food is inspiring. Where does this desire to understand the intricacies come from? “It stems from the realization that I'll never know everything. The constant pursuit of understanding why things work the way they do intrigues me. Embracing the mentality of not knowing everything opens a world of possibilities to learn and grow.” You've been cooking for a long time. Is there one dish that's your favorite to cook or your go-to when cooking for someone for the first time? “Pizza is my go-to dish. It's the most versatile food. Anything can be a topping, except for pineapple… I love that I can make something new every time I make pizza. My favorite is called 'The Murphy Special,' named after the Domino’s driver who came up with it. He got a small pizza dough and stretched it out to a medium, so it was really thin and crispy, then added barbecue sauce, habanero sauce, then spinach, then cheese, pepperoni, roasted red peppers, and it was the best pizza I’ve ever had.” End the pineapple on pizza debate. “When you eat a pineapple pizza, the pineapple is so acidic that it causes the toppings to slide off the pizza and all you taste is the pineapple. It doesn’t balance out on pizza. It also dries out when cooked in the oven, which causes the juice to spread everywhere on the pizza. But that’s just my opinion.” #WeAreDallasCollege

"I wasn't really well informed about college. My parents, they came from Mexico, so I'm first gen. When I see my dad, I see a man who has been working at least 80 hours a week as a welder. So, I see that, and I think that, yes, I have got to work hard. I started working as a fence builder and focused all my energy on that, but I didn’t like it. I then became a painter and witnessed all these grown men just working and working and then just getting only a little bit of a paycheck. Actually, the same amount of paycheck that I'm getting right now as a lifeguard. My mom works a lot too, so she's hardly around. This sparked the fire inside me. I don't want to work outside. I don't want to do manual labor. I want to do something I enjoy and still support my family. So here I am, going to college to change my future. To support myself and the family I want to have one day, so they have a better life than me. I've been to Highland Park, and I've seen how all those kids live. They have different lives than me. Right there, I also knew that I want my kids to have that kind of life. Not for me, but for them. College is the key to making that happen. And I hope that one day, with the degree that I will get in Radiology, I will become a doctor. That way, I could help my parents retire so they won't have to work anymore and can just live peacefully." #EveryStudentIsAStory
