You must be seriously morally defunct if you attack ambulances that assist Jewish and non-Jewish communities. That’s pretty disgraceful. In a democracy, screening a film is a reflection of our society’s freedom of expression and has nothing to do with government to government relations. The legendary Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi dedicated his New York Critics award to the people of Iran. Keep in mind that after the Golden Globes, Panahi — who has already served time in prison — is returning to Iran, where he is set to serve out another prison sentence. He could stay in the U.S. and Europe and thrive, but he is returning to his country. A TRUE IRANIAN PATRIOT. This is what he told Variety about returning: “I have to go back to Iran. And I did go back to Iran [after Cannes]. I am the kind of person who needs to be in his country. I need to breathe there and work there. And even if they want to go ahead with that prison sentence, they can go ahead. Nothing will change my mind about going back.”

People need reflection. I regret not having more time with you. Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius. Thank you for being a beacon of light to a generation and beyond who had no remembrance of the legacy that preceded us. Thank you for charting the course and for making space during a time when no similar space really existed. You imaged a unity of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood to a generation that only saw itself as having to be one or the other.
