I’m presenting!! 🙌🏾
Catch me at the Greater Houston Area STEM Conference where I’ll be talking about how we can support real student sensemaking through phenomena ⚡
This session is all about moving beyond “just doing labs” to helping students actually figure things out—using lightning as our anchor phenomenon.
If you’re in the building, come rock with me 💙

Excited to support 5th grade science teachers at Madison Elementary today!
We’re working together to integrate culturally relevant phenomena and social justice into science instruction—helping students connect what they’re learning to their lives, their communities, and the world around them.
This is what meaningful STEM learning looks like:
✔ Centering student experiences
✔ Making science relevant
✔ Creating space for all voices
Grateful to partner with educators who are committed to doing this work 💛

New strategy I learned today while working with @STEM4Real : KLEWS Charts
KLEWS charts help students organize their thinking as they investigate a phenomenon.
K – What we Know
L – What we are Learning
E – Our Evidence
W – What we Wonder
S – The Science ideas that explain the phenomenon
I’m excited to start using this strategy to make student thinking visible in science.

When I first started teaching, Four Corners was one of the strategies that helped me get students talking about their thinking.
Students respond to a statement by moving to a corner of the room (Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree) and then explain their reasoning with evidence.
Simple structure. Powerful classroom discussion.

Helping students explain their thinking is just as important as getting the right answer.
The Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) strategy supports students in building scientific explanations using evidence and reasoning.
When students learn to explain why, their understanding goes deeper.
🔬 Science is not just about answers. It's about evidence.

I just finished preparing my presentation for the University of Houston–Clear Lake STEM Conference on March 28, 2026!
My session, “Making Sense of Lightning: Supporting NGSS Sensemaking Through Phenomena,” explores how a lightning phenomenon can spark student questioning, modeling, and evidence-based explanations using the MOSAIC framework.
Educators will experience strategies such as Notice & Wonder, related phenomena, gallery walks, and model revision to support science sensemaking.
⚡ When students try to figure out why lightning happens, they’re doing real science.

Helping students explain their thinking is just as important as getting the right answer.
The Think-Aloud strategy allows teachers to model how scientists and mathematicians reason through problems step by step. When students hear the thinking behind the process, they begin to connect math, data, and scientific phenomena in meaningful ways.
At MosesSTEMinc L3C, we focus on instructional strategies that support inquiry, reasoning, and sensemaking in STEM classrooms.

Showed up and showed out. 🧪🔥
2nd hour really did that. These AVID One-Pagers on Counting Atoms are the perfect example of taking a lot of info and making it actually make sense.
The Breakdown:
Visuals > Text: Mapping out H_2O molecules so you can actually see what’s happening.
Color Coding: Keeping those coefficients and subscripts separate so the math stays clean.
Synthesis: Turning a whole lesson into a single, high-level "cheat sheet."
Chemistry is a lot easier when you've got it mapped out like this. Absolute 10/10 effort from the crew today. 🎨 @PlaquemineHigh

Beyond accountability—toward understanding.
This action plan reframes LEAP 2025 Biology data as evidence of student thinking, not just scores. When we look closely at student work, reasoning patterns, and sensemaking, we make better instructional decisions—and create more equitable science classrooms.
This work centers inquiry, formative assessment, reflective PLCs, and LEAP-aligned rubrics to support teachers and elevate student reasoning.
Equity lives in how we use data.
