We couldn’t catch the whole school board candidate event but feel so energized by youth bringing their concerns to the candidates!! @pvdstudentunion @NAACPprov @Ariseducation @PLEE

@JMuhingabo shares that he would continue to push for the ethnic studies campaign and notes that in conjunction we need more dual language programs to reflect the diversity of our student’s languages !

Candidate Jenny Mercado echoes that there is a lack of transparency and knows that parents often don’t feel welcome to the current meetings and wants to change that.

Candidate Herman Brewster shares he wants to be on the school board because he’s concerned with finding out why we have failing schools. He shares that PPSD works in secret and he thinks that needs to change.

Candidate @toni_d_akin shares that if elected, she would be looking to have a student representative at each active subcommittee level. She also shares that she had successful passage of a resolution to have revolving meetings at different schools.

Candidate @JMuhingabo shares that he would create different advisory boards: for students, parents, and educators. He also shares his story about joining the school board and advocating for student and parents to be heard.

Candidate @CoreyJonesPVD shares that he wants to empower youth voices by using student focused governance- a model used to success in Chicago, and also include participatory budget so that students have some say in how $ is used.

Candidate Michael Nina shares that Board meetings need to change- by joining youth where they’re already meeting, joining community events, & making it easier for parents, students, and community members to engage.
