This morning,I chaired a meeting of the Maritime Coordination Group(MCG), an active platform of International development partners based in Kenya, who are key stakeholders in the maritime security sector by virtue of playing pertinent roles in providing proactive policy and institutional support to our Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The MCG functions ,as a collective forum, in safeguarding maritime interests and promoting regional stability in East and Horn of Africa. Secondly, the MCG is a common platform through which partners meet and minimise duplication of efforts. It ,therefore, serves as a hub for collaboration and coordination, that ensures maritime law enforcement resources are strategically allocated.
Accordingly , I received various updates from different partners , who reported on the progress made ,in the last two months and their plans for the betterment of the sector.
As the Chair of the National Maritime Security Committee, I reiterated the unwavering commitment by the Government in fostering the ‘whole of government approach’ as well as having continuous engagements, in addressing the security challenges in Western Indian Ocean.
Finally, I commissioned the development of Kenya’s National Maritime Security Strategy and the finalization of the Kenya National Maritime Risk Register, that will aid Kenya in protection of her ocean resources and also mitigate any risks and threats, which may occur at sea. I requested the MCG members to support the strategy development process by bringing on board global best practices, from their respective countries.
