🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Understanding the Welsh electorate: Mapping voter types ahead of the 2026 Senedd Election Our latest analysis, conducted for @BBCCymruWales, mapped the values and attitudes that shape the Welsh electorate today and grouped voters into six types that capture the real diversity of views across Wales ahead of the #SeneddElection on 7 May 2026. This mapping is used to inform a BBC Wales journalism project looking into how the Senedd election campaign develops online, and what types of content voters might be seeing. How have attitudes towards tax and public spending changed? New findings from the British Social Attitudes survey show a clear shift in public opinion. 📉 36% say government should increase taxes and spend more, down 19 points since 2022 and the lowest level since 2013. 📈 19% now say taxes and spending should be reduced, an all-time high, and more than double the figure recorded in 2022 (8%).

Is Britain turning against first-past-the-post? New analysis from the British Social Attitudes survey shows a significant shift in public opinion on the UK’s electoral system. For decades, support for keeping the current first-past-the-post system consistently outweighed backing for change. Until 2017, support for keeping the system rarely dipped below 50%, while support for switching to a more proportional system rarely rose above 40%. The shift has also cut across party lines. While Conservative supporters traditionally favoured keeping first-past-the-post, in 2025 slightly more now support change (52%) than oppose it (48%). Majorities of Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green supporters continue to favour reform. #BritishSocialAttitudes #Democracy #ElectoralReform #PublicOpinion

📣 New British Social Attitudes findings published today Public support for higher taxes and increased public spending has fallen sharply since 2022, while political divisions over the role of the state have widened to levels not previously seen. Just 36% now say government should increase taxes and spend more on health, education and welfare, the lowest level since 2013 and down 19 percentage points in three years. Attitudes are increasingly divided by party support, with just 21% of Conservative and Reform supporters backing higher taxes and spending, compared with 52% of Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green supporters. Elsewhere, priorities within welfare are shifting, and while attitudes towards immigration have become more sceptical in recent years, they remain less negative than a decade ago. The survey also finds continued majority support for assisted dying, with 79% saying it should be allowed.

Trigger warning: suicide, suicidal thoughts, gambling harms Published this week with @GambleAware, our new research explores the link between gambling harms and suicidality in Great Britain. Using a nationally representative survey of over 11,000 people alongside in-depth interviews, we found that one in five people experiencing the highest levels of gambling harm had attempted suicide, with most linking their attempt directly to gambling. In this video, Dr Sokratis Dinos, explains why suicide prevention and gambling support cannot be treated separately, and why integrated, long-term, stigma-aware support is essential to reducing harm.
