“Without enforcement, you cannot have value for intellectual property.” One of the major concerns raised during the Kampala Protocol discussion was how creatives would truly benefit from regional copyright protection. Responding to the concerns on enforcement and protection of works, Kenneth Rutaremwa explained: “The protocol is giving creatives another level of protection beyond national borders.” He added that the regional framework is intended to strengthen recognition, licensing, dispute resolution, and enforcement of creative works across member states.

The focus is on strengthening copyright protection, ownership, and commercialisation across the region. Mr Robert Mugabe, Acting Registrar General and Commissioner for Intellectual Property, emphasises the importance of voluntary copyright registration. He stresses that it safeguards creators’ rights and supports Uganda’s thriving creative economy. In his opening remarks, he highlighted that creative industries can’t flourish without creators benefiting from their work.

President @KagutaMuseveni has assented to eight pieces of legislation, including the National Drug and Health Products Authority Act, 2026, which expands regulation across medicines, vaccines, medical devices, diagnostics, cosmetics, and other health products, strengthening safety and oversight. Also assented to were the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, 2026, introducing mandatory energy standards, audits, and regulation of inefficient technologies, and the Non-Performing Assets Recovery Trust (Repeal) Act, 2024, which dissolves the Trust and transfers its functions to the Ministry of Finance to streamline operations. The Employment (Amendment) Act, 2025 strengthens protections for domestic, casual, and migrant workers, while the Forensic and Scientific Analytical Services Act, 2026 enhances forensic systems and evidence handling. Other laws assented to include the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Act, 2026, the Public Enterprises Reform and Divestiture (Amendment) Act, 2024, and the Magistrates Courts (Amendment) Act, 2026.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 🚨 SECURITY ALERT AND PUBLIC NOTICE Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) Kampala, Uganda The Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) wishes to formally notify its member associations, stakeholders, the general public, media fraternity, and national security agencies of credible information regarding a planned and coordinated effort by certain individuals and groups to orchestrate incidents aimed at discrediting Eddy Kenzo and the leadership of UNMF. Nature of the Concern UNMF has received intelligence indicating attempts to: Stage public confrontations and security incidents Circulate false allegations and misleading narratives Manipulate media platforms and online channels Undermine the reputation, credibility, and ongoing work of the Federation leadership These actions appear calculated to create public disorder, reputational damage, and institutional mistrust. Context Preliminary findings suggest that these activities may involve: Certain promoters and industry actors A section of musicians acting outside the spirit of unity and professionalism Individuals who previously held positions of responsibility but did not establish sustainable industry structures Some media practitioners and bloggers Elements of political opportunism seeking relevance through controversy UNMF emphasizes that these remain matters of concern under observation, and relevant authorities are best placed to investigate and determine accountability. Call to Action To UNMF Member Associations We urge all members to: Remain calm, vigilant, and responsible Avoid engagement in provocations or unverified claims Report any suspicious developments through official UNMF and security channels Uphold the Federation’s values of unity, discipline, and professionalism To the Media and Public We appeal for: Responsible reporting and verification of information Avoidance of amplifying unverified or sensational content Continued support for constructive industry development To Security Agencies UNMF respectfully calls upon the relevant authorities to: Take note of this alert and enhance preventive and protective measures Investigate any attempts to incite disorder or target individuals Ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders, particularly during public engagements UNMF Position The Uganda National Musicians Federation remains committed to: Peaceful engagement and national unity Structured growth and governance of the music industry Strengthening its collaborative relationship with government and stakeholders We strongly condemn any efforts to use intimidation, misinformation, or orchestrated conflict as tools for personal, political, or commercial gain. Conclusion UNMF reassures all stakeholders that it will continue to operate with transparency, integrity, and resilience in advancing the interests of musicians and the creative sector in Uganda. The Federation will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to ensure that peace, order, and professionalism are maintained across the industry. “Together for the Music.”
