ND Law 1L Matthew Krauter’s (@MatthewKrauter) article, co-authored with Georgetown professor Stephanie Barclay (@shbarclay), “The Untold Story of the Proto-Smith Era: Justice O’Connor’s Papers and the Court’s Free Exercise Revolution,” was published in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review. The article draws from their archival research at the Library of Congress to shed new light on how the U.S. Supreme Court arrived at its present free exercise doctrine. Notre Dame Law School’s Moot Court Board has had an outstanding semester so far. One of the teams, consisting of oralists Alexa Kawlewski and Savannah Shoffner with brief writer Kendall Tribus, placed 4th in the National Telecommunications Tournament with Kendall's brief placing 3rd overall. In addition, one of the American Bar Association (ABA) teams, consisting of oralists Emily Amershek and Thomas MacPhee with brief writer Spencer Brown, has advanced past the regional round of the tournament and qualified for ABA Nationals! Brief writer Spencer Brown had the 4th highest-scored brief in the region. The ABA team will compete in Nationals on April 9 to 11 in Chicago. We are incredibly proud of our Moot Court Board teams!

This Women's History Month, we are thrilled to celebrate the success of Notre Dame Law School’s all-women Jessup team for advancing to the White and Case Jessup International Rounds for the first time in ND Law history. From March 3 to 8, Notre Dame third-year law students Grace Elias, Camille Golowski, Mariko Jurcsak, Ava Moreno, and Mary Pat Peterson competed in the King & Spaulding U.S. National Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The team received coaching and guidance from ND Law Professor Mary Ellen O’Connell and J.S.D. candidate Gvantsa Dolbaia, with additional support from faculty and students. The International Rounds will start tomorrow, March 28, and go until April 4 in Washington, D.C. We wish our phenomenal Jessup team the best of luck! Death Penalty Abolition Week continues today with a powerful conversation with Anthony Ray Hinton, who was falsely convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to death in the state of Alabama. After nearly 30 years on death row for crimes he did not commit, Hinton was subsequently exonerated and finally released. This event will include an introduction by Dean G. ND Law Professor Jimmy Gurulé, director of the @NDLawEJC, visited Mexico City last week to address the Notre Dame Worldwide Advisory Council. He discussed the program for the defense of Mexican nationals in criminal matters in the United States (PDM) and the partnership between the Notre Dame Exoneration Justice Clinic, the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (@UNAM_MX). He also joined Notre Dame Mexico's Evening Celebration of Fulbright Excellence last Thursday, which brought together @NotreDame colleagues and alumni from a range of disciplines.
