On 11 February, we remember the release of Nelson Mandela. A moment that marked the end of one long injustice and the beginning of a nation’s reckoning with freedom, dignity, and responsibility. This year also marks 27 years of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. 27 years of carrying Madiba’s legacy forward, protecting his values, and advancing social justice in a democratic South Africa. From 27 years behind bars to 27 years of legacy in action, the work of freedom continues. #OnThisDay #MandelaLegacy #FreedomAndJustice #27Years

Today marks the beginning of Freedom Month in South Africa, a time to reflect on the country’s transition to democracy in 1994 and the meaning of freedom in our lives today. The words in this image are from a message by Nelson Mandela, read by his daughter Zindzi Mandela at a rally in Jabulani Stadium, Soweto, on 10 February 1985, in response to an offer of conditional freedom. Madiba's words, and the choices he made, remind us that freedom is not only personal, but collective. That our own liberation is bound up in the liberation of others. As we reflect this month, we are called to consider what freedom means today, and what it demands of us in building a more just and equal society. #FreedomMonth #NelsonMandela #MadibaLegacy #Justice #southafrica

Today, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is at the 6th South Africa Investment Conference at the Sandton Convention Centre. Nelson Mandela reminded us that overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. In this context, investment must advance dignity, inclusion and opportunity for all. Our work continues to centre justice, ethical leadership and democracy as essential to building a more inclusive and equitable economy. #SAInvestmentConference #NelsonMandelaFoundation

As we close off Women’s Month, the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted an important conversation on news, accountability and participation in our democracy. Convened by Explain News, with the support of the Canadian High Commission, this International Women’s Day dialogue brought together voices from across media, policy and civil society. When Women Switch Off: News, Accountability and Local Power Ahead of the 2026 Elections asked a critical question: what happens when women disengage from the news, and what that means for accountability at a local level. As South Africa moves closer to the 2026 local government elections, the conversation reinforced the need to rebuild trust, relevance and access to information as a foundation for active citizenship. #WomensMonth #InternationalWomensDay #Democracy #NMF

The Nelson Mandela Foundation will host a dialogue at the Human Rights Festival at Constitution Hill this Saturday, 28 March 2026, as part of Human Rights Month. Titled Why Land Redistribution Matters, the conversation forms part of the festival’s theme, Memory, Resistance, and Reimagining the Future. It will reflect on why equitable access to land remains central to justice, dignity and inclusive development in South Africa. More than three decades into democracy, the pace of land redistribution remains slow, while demand for land continues to grow, particularly in urban areas. We are convening this dialogue as part of our broader work to advance equitable access to land, including our ongoing legal case calling on the State to fulfil its obligations under Section 25(5) of the Constitution. Entry to the Human Rights Festival is free, but tickets must be secured via Webtickets. Today, the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted a special edition of its Making Reading Fun programme, bringing together children, families and young authors to centre literacy as a fundamental human right. As South Africa reflects on the legacy of Sharpeville and the ongoing struggle for dignity and equality, the Foundation used storytelling to highlight a critical truth: without the ability to read for meaning, many children are excluded from fully participating in society. The programme featured readings by author and reader Mathabo Tlali, alongside guest authors Gomolemo Moagi, Naledi Setzin and Mahlohonolo Thulo, creating an interactive space for intergenerational storytelling. At a time when the majority of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for meaning, access to books, language and literacy is not simply an educational issue, it is a matter of justice. #MakingReadingFun #HumanRightsDay #NelsonMandelaFoundation #EducationForFreedom

This Saturday, we’re joined by a powerful group of storytellers bringing imagination, insight and inspiration to life. From award-winning author Sihle-Isipho Nontshokweni-Bikitsha, to emerging voices like Gomolemo Moagi and Naledi Setzin, each reader brings a unique perspective rooted in literacy, creativity and the joy of storytelling. At the heart of it all is Mathabo Tali, whose passion and consistency have helped shape the Making Reading Fun programme into a space children return to with excitement and curiosity. Together, they continue to nurture a love for reading in young minds. See you there. #MakingReadingFun #NelsonMandelaFoundation #LiteracyMatters #Storytelling
