Gave a class at @killer_chess tonight. It was part of my series on A FRIENDLY INTRODUCTION TO POSITIONAL CHESS, this time with the focus on two games from the Candidates. You can see the examples as well on our YouTube Channel, where we published some updates for the first six rounds (before everyone went home). This position arose from our discussion and is surprisingly winning for White. But how?

@NewInChess Is this your realm? What does the “6” in Grandmaster Repertoire 6A refer to—and is the A/B split simply Anti-Sicilians vs Open Sicilian? Is there a full key to the numbering anywhere?

Amazing, they drew the standard position, but with opposite castling! This means that the Berlin, 1 d4 d5 2 Nc3 Nf6 3 Bg5 Nf6? , now is refuted by 4 0-0-0 covering the d4 pawn!

Yes, White has to exchange queens. He lost quickly after 1.Qe8? Qc1+ 2.Kf2 Qf4+ and Black was dominating. After 1.Qxc7 Rxc7 2.d6! Rd7 3.Rd2 Kf7 4.Rd5 Ke6 5.Rxa5 Rxd6 6.Rb5 White is active and will make the draw.

Solution time. White has a chance to play 1.a5! with the point that after 1...bxa5, he can play 2.f4. Later, there are many positions where the knight can come to c5 and attack the e6-pawn in a way that cannot be protected. There are a lot of extra moves to play, but this is a strong start.

The Danish Championship will finish on Sunday. Ochsner is leading with 4.5/6. He won a long game in Round 6, missing an early chance to win here. What is the strongest move?

@NewInChess 1.a5 bxa5 2.f4 gxf4 3.Nxf4 Kd7 4.Nd3 followed by 5.Nc5 and white should win since octopus knight on c5 can’t be captured due to potential passer on the kingside
