Leh’s Project Tsang-da Urban Mission has transformed sustainable waste management in a remote, high-altitude region.
It introduced 100% door-to-door waste collection, source segregation, and a solar-powered waste management system.
A 30 tonnes-per-day (TPD) solar-powered plant was set up through the initiative, achieving ~95% waste processing, while converting waste into useful products and generating revenue.
This initiative has resulted in improved cleanliness and a significant reduction in open dumping in Leh.
This self-sustaining waste management model can be potentially replicated in other regions.
These achievements have been documented as Best Practices on the NITI for States (NFS) Knowledge Portal—an initiative under the State Support Mission.
