Folks, disease doesn’t give a Tinker’s damn about political party. Federal support through NIH, NSF, and other agencies for basic and applied biological science has made the US the undisputed world leader in these sciences. Cutting back in this area is a recipe for disaster.

@jackcschultz @ScienceYael Agreed, and glad for professional societies that faciliate (@ASBMB), even if institutions don't. This said, big fan of the neighborhood BBQ, sideline time for kids' sports, as the informal way for our neighbors to learn who scientists are, what we do, etc. in key ways.

@nmrkaygee @ScienceYael As I say in another post, we’ve been saying/hearing this for a couple of decades. Evidently not enough has happened. More would happened if a) institutions rewarded scientists for doing it and b) paid for it.

Just watched the full House hearing & testimony of NIH Director Dr. Monica Bertignolli. A few takeaways: • the proposed budget, in addition to not increasing for inflation, wants to condense NIH from 27 to 15 institutes. The NIH does not think this is a good idea. 🧵1/?

With the passing of Alex Pines the world is a bit dimmer today. Alex was a great scientist, but even a greater mentsch. His generosity, empathy and "firgun" were contagious, and turned people from self-centered, into open and caring. May his memory be a blessing יהי זכרו ברוך

I often hear folks say, “Donald Trump sent me a check during the pandemic.” I want to make sure you understand this: Congress sent you a check. By the way, Joe Biden also sent you a check during the pandemic, just like I gave people relief during the Great Recession. The difference is that we didn’t put our names on it – because it wasn’t about feeding our egos or advancing our politics, it was about helping people. So don’t be giving him credit for that. And don’t give him your vote, either. There’s only one candidate in this election who cares about you, and that’s Kamala Harris.

#chemtwitter any NMR facility in the US have a low-frequency probe that could be tuned to tungsten NMR? Really curious to try it but looks like standard NMRs don't go that low (ours can do 109Ag-31P). I have some W compounds I want NMR on, and others I know want it too!
