Yesterday I delivered the 8th Annual Wenger Lecture on International Trade at American University entitled “Global Trade, Overdependencies and the Future of the Multilateral Trading System” followed by a fireside chat moderated by former WTO Deputy Director General Angela Ellard. With @IndermitGill World Bank Chief Economist and his team on the sidelines of the WB-IMF spring meetings. Accompanied by WTO DDG Johanna Hill, WTO Chief Economist Prof Bob Staiger and other @WTO staff, we exchanged views on ongoing economic work on global growth and global trade, industrial policies, and the role and prospects of AI in Trade and Development among other issues. At a Harvard Kennedy School fireside chat moderated by Aissata Lam @lam_aissa and organized by the Africa Development Conference on “Trading Power: Africa’s Agency in a Fragmented Global Economy”. An animated discussion on opportunities in global trade for the continent in a disrupted global trading environment.

There’s great interest in what really happened at the WTO’s MC14. At Harvard University with faculty and staff discussing this, the state of global trade, and the room for WTO Reforms. Very interesting to debate macroeconomic policy management with Professor @jasonfurman’s Macroeconomics Class (EC10) in Sanders Theatre. This was a class I took 53 years ago in the same venue. Great questions from brilliant students. Among faculty, was happy to be joined by Professors David Laibson, Pol Antràs, Myrto Kalouptsidi, Marc Melitz, Dani Rodrik and Gordon Hanson. thank you for your animating conversation, intellectual strength and wisdom.
