A parasite that has been eating people for 3,500 years is about to be wiped off the planet. It infected 3.5 million people in 1986. Last year, it infected 10. And I have not seen it make a single front page. It is called Guinea worm. You drink contaminated water from a pond in a poor village. A year later, a worm up to three feet long starts coming out of your leg through a burning blister. There is no pill that stops it and no surgery that works. You wrap the worm around a stick and pull it out slowly, over days or weeks, inch by inch. If you rush, the worm breaks inside you and causes a fresh infection. Guinea worm is ancient. Preserved worms have been pulled out of Egyptian mummies from around 1000 BCE. The Ebers Papyrus, an Egyptian medical scroll from 1550 BCE, describes pulling the worm out with a stick. For three and a half thousand years, that was the best humans could do. Then in 1986, public health workers decided to kill the parasite off. They had no vaccine and no drug. What they had was cheap cloth water filters and a small army of volunteers willing to walk from village to village for decades. The plan was simple. Give everyone who drinks from a pond a cloth filter to strain out the tiny water fleas that spread the parasite. Then send volunteers walking house to house, year after year, teaching people how to use the filters and keeping anyone with an emerging worm out of the water. It worked. From 3.5 million cases a year to 10. Four were in Chad, four in Ethiopia, two in South Sudan. The other four countries where the worm used to be common, Angola, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Mali, had zero human cases for the second year in a row. The World Health Organization has already certified 200 countries as Guinea worm free. Six are left. The last hurdle is dogs. Cameroon had 445 infected animals last year and Chad had 147, so a lot of the remaining work is on animals, not humans. Strays get leashed, and crews treat ponds to kill any remaining worms. The campaign keeps watching until the number hits zero. When Guinea worm hits zero, it becomes the second human disease ever erased from the planet. The first was smallpox. It will also be the first parasite humans have ever wiped out, and the first disease ever ended without a single dose of medicine. Volunteers walked village to village with cloth filters for 40 years. Now a plague from the age of the pharaohs is about to be gone.

one day, you’ll be freshly postpartum; struggling to go to the toilet alone or staring at your stretched, unfamiliar body, and it’s really going to matter who you married. kindness is not optional. everything else eventually stops mattering. please choose someone kind.

#OctobreRose

675 Sudanese killed in two weeks from UAE-RSF shelling. 327 children, 264 women & 84 men. Another 171 children & 58 elderly died from starvation in the same time period. El Fasher is being starved & bombed, this is a genocide & famine funded by the UAE & ignored by the world
Sudanese Echo@SudaneseEcho

HAC Report: 327 Children Killed in Al-Fashir by RSF Shelling, 171 More Die of Starvation in Two Weeks Port Sudan, October 2025 New figures from Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) reveal an alarming humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Al-Fashir, North Darfur, where hundreds of civilians, mostly children and women, have died within a two-week span due to relentless attacks by the UAE-backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) and worsening starvation under siege conditions that have now lasted more than 550 days. According to the report, which covers the period between August 29 and September 14, 2025, a total of 675 civilians were killed as a result of continuous shelling and drone strikes launched by the Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) targeting displacement centers and shelters in Al-Fashir. The victims include 327 children, 264 women, and 84 men. The Commission further recorded 171 children and 58 elderly people who died of hunger during the same period, as the blockade has cut off access to food, clean water, and medical supplies. The report also confirms that three major camps surrounding Al-Fashir, namely Salam, Zamzam, and Abu Shouk, have completely halted operations after being repeatedly targeted by the militia. These camps once provided essential shelter and services for tens of thousands of displaced people but have been forced to shut down due to the ongoing attacks and insecurity. Under the section on community-led food support, HAC notes that only six out of twenty-two communal kitchens, locally known as “takaya,” remain operational on a daily basis, while fifteen operate intermittently due to shortages of supplies, funding cuts, or direct threats from the militia. Even the kitchens that remain open are functioning at less than seventy percent of their capacity. HAC warned that the sharp decline in food preparation and distribution reflects the growing desperation in Al-Fashir, where entire neighborhoods now survive on one meal every two or three days, if any at all. The siege on Al-Fashir has now entered its eighteenth month. The city remains completely encircled by the UAE-backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed), which continues to defy UN Security Council Resolution 2736 that called for an immediate end to hostilities, unrestricted humanitarian access, and the protection of civilians. Instead, the militia has intensified its attacks, targeting hospitals, shelters, and aid convoys, deepening the humanitarian catastrophe. This report underscores that what is happening in Al-Fashir is not a consequence of neglect but of deliberate policy. The UAE continues to fund and arm the Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed), enabling its campaign of starvation and terror, while at the same time buying the world’s silence through political deals and economic incentives. Behind every number in this report lies a human story of suffering — children dying of hunger, mothers unable to feed their families, and a city that has been collectively punished for over 550 days. As the world looks away, the siege of Al-Fashir stands as a grim testament to how power and wealth can silence conscience, even in the face of mass death. #Sudan #RSFisTerroristOrganization #UAEKillsSudanesePeople #UAESponsorsTerrorism

The silence is global. Not just Africa, even the wider Muslim world has turned away. Sudan deserves the same solidarity and outrage shown for Palestine, but it’s Sudanese people saving each other while the world chooses not to care
BIN DIESEL@BinweA

as African people, we are failing Sudan in a big way. like we really need to lock in and speak up the way we've done for Palestine. it's not one or the other, but it absolutely HAS to be both. and urgently.
