The first Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook of 2026 is out. Good news: No tropical cyclone formation is expected over the next 7 days across the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf. Critical fire weather is expected Friday across the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, and southern High Plains due to gusty winds and low humidity. Severe thunderstorms capable of large to very large hail, wind damage and tornadoes will be possible Friday and Saturday across parts of the central Plains.

Gusty to high winds and low relative humidity will bring elevated to critical fire weather across large parts of the Great Plains and more localized parts of the Great Basin and central Rockies Thursday into Friday. Severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging wind gusts are possible over the central Plains Thursday into this weekend.

A change in weather pattern will occur in the days 3-7 range as moisture returns to the Central U.S. and brings chances for Excessive Rainfall and locally strong storms. Across the East, warmth will build into the region and may meet hazardous heat criteria for some areas.

Storm activity noted over the last hour near Lake Erie. Noted threats at the moment include lightning, small hail (peas/dime size), and wind gusts between 35-40 mph. Keep an eye on these developing storms this afternoon with a passing cold front.
