Addressing residents in Kayamandi, the Acting Minister of Social Development, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga, delivered a heartfelt message to young people, particularly young men, urging them not to resort to violence, substance abuse or self-harm when facing disappointment in relationships and life. The Minister warned against the rise of intimate partner abuse and called on communities to reject all forms of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, stressing that the government continues to invest significant resources in responding to violence that is often caused by people harming those closest to them. Encouraging hope and resilience, the Minister reminded young people that rejection and heartbreak are part of life and should never lead to destructive actions. She called on communities to respect one another, choose love over violence, and build safer families and communities for all. #ChildProtection365 #SiyayaEmphakathiniNjalo #DSDPortfolioAtWork #SocialDevelopmentInAction

The Acting Minister of Social Development, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga, during her engagement with residents of Kayamandi in Stellenbosch raised concern over the growing scourge of substance abuse, particularly among young people, warning that South Africa cannot become “a generation known for drinking in public and abusing substances.” She encouraged those struggling with addiction to seek help, emphasising that government social workers and support services remain available through local social development offices. The Minister further cautioned against the misuse of social grants, saying it is deeply saddening that money intended to support vulnerable households is sometimes diverted towards drugs and alcohol. She also called on faith-based leaders to work hand-in-hand with government in curbing substance abuse and restoring moral values within communities. Speaking during Child Protection Month, the Minister highlighted the growing challenges faced by parents in raising children in today’s society, noting that some children are taking advantage of their rights while parents struggle to maintain discipline and guidance. She further called on young men to respect women and end all forms of abuse, while also condemning the abuse of men by women, stressing that violence in any form has no place in society. #SiyayaEmphakathiniNjalo #ChildProtection365 #DSDPortfolioAtWork #SocialDevelopmentInAction #BathoPele

#IcropInKayamandi Kayamandi continues to carry the scars of recent floods, while communities grapple with the harsh realities of gangsterism, violence, extortion, substance abuse and rising levels of GBVF and child abuse. Local businesses are living under the threat of violence and extortion, while deep social inequalities, worsened by the absence of fathers continue to leave many children and families vulnerable. Ward Councillor Cllr Ayanda Tomose highlighted the urgent need for stronger partnerships with the government to confront crime and social ills affecting the community, declaring: “Not in our name.” The Councillor further urged men to stand up against GBVF and work alongside the government in rebuilding safer communities. He also called foaloncreased investment in sports, arts and culture, Early Childhood Development infrastructure, youth business opportunities, as well as strengthened support for older persons and persons with disabilities. #SiyayaEmphakathiniNjalo #DSDPortfolioAtWork #SocialDevelopmentInAction
