We are launching a week-long celebration of artist Paul Reed, honoring what would have been his 107th birthday on March 28, with a conversation featuring artist Mokha Laget. Laget studied under Reed at the Corcoran in Washington, DC, and recalled their friendship and his lasting influence on her practice. In the final weeks of “Paul Reed: A Retrospective,” we are highlighting stories like this from those who knew Reed personally and those who helped make this exhibition possible. Visit okcmoa.com/blog to read and listen to the interview.

In Paul Reed’s “Platform” series, a receding platform comprised of four or five bands becomes a recurring motif. Reed described this form as resembling a “hand, flag, sail, or raft,” and an inspiration for it was the striped sleeve depicted in Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s painting “La Loge” (1874). Colors appear flat, with the rectangular bands hovering above the picture plane in both one- and two-point perspectives. In some works, Reed replaces the bands with scraped opaque rectangles of thick impasto against abstract backgrounds. The bands may also appear as superimposed reflections or shadows, and have been overlaid on photos, as in “Bofodora ’84.” See the “Platform” series on our third floor! 🎨 Plan your visit at okcmoa.com/paulreed -- Paul Reed, “AMAG,” 2001, acrylic on canvas, 20 x 19 1/8 in., Collection of the University of Maryland Global Campus (Adelphi, MD), © Paul and Esther Reed Trust, photo: John Woo Paul Reed, “Bofodora '84,” 2003, digital print, 11 x 8 1/2 in., Georgetown University Art Collection, Gift of the artist, 2009.13.10, © Paul and Esther Reed Trust
