We're incredibly proud of our student, Ella in Year 11 for her fantastic work experience with @Orsted @OrstedUK Not only did she gain valuable insights into the renewable energy sector, but her ambition and commitment have now inspired her to apply for one of their apprenticeship placements next year. In recognition of her incredible effort and for demonstrating our school DANCE values, Ella is the first recipient of our Healing Hero medal for 2025 - 2026. This award celebrates students who go above and beyond and Ella is the great example. Here is a summary of Ella's week. During my week at Orsted I participated in many different activities. At the beginning of the week we had an introduction to the Grimsby East Coast Hub and a QSHE (quality, safety, health and environment) briefing explaining the importance of health and safety around the site. Whilst on our tour we saw the new training facility, met the offshore co-ordination team and went in the control room where we saw a helicopter land on an offshore substation. We also learnt cartography with bearings taught to us by the head of the co-ordination team. We spent time with the technicians learning about their day-to-day roles on the wind turbines. I found this very interesting and enjoyed tasks given to us, including stripping down a valve and reassembling it. We tried on the PPE including the harnesses used to keep them safe whilst on the turbines. We undertook other tasks where we had to build a turbine out of items provided. We got the opportunity to look around a Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) which is the smaller vessel that takes the technicians to the closer turbines. This was bigger and nicer than I imagined it to be. We also visited the helicopters located at Humberside Airport. The team explained to us about how important they are, as they provide a fast and direct way to get technicians and deliver essential supplies to the Turbines. One of my favourite parts in the week was when we had an apprenticeship afternoon with Rob Howes. We were challenged to design a solution to prevent ice formation on turbine blades. Our team proposed an insulated sleeve—a simple yet effective concept that sparked a discussion between the team. We rounded off the week by creating a short video about our work experience with Orsted which we had to present to the manager of the East Coast Hub. It was a proud moment to reflect on everything we had learned and achieved through the week. Overall my week at Orsted was both transformative and inspiring. Where I learnt some really interesting facts about the company but also gained valuable hands-on experience. It has been an eye-opening and immersive experience I will carry with me as I explore future opportunities in engineering and renewable energy. Congratulations, Ella!
