Thanks to members of our Wildland Team, who joined crews from Louisburg and Osawatomie as part of a state ordered response to assist with a wildfire emergency in southwestern Kansas. Crews worked 20 hour shifts with groups from Colorado and Wyoming to help our neighbors.

Four rescued from overnight apt. fire at the Sheridan Ridge Apts. 83rd and Farley. One adult and 3 children transported in critical condition. Another adult transported in stable condition. Fire quickly knocked down and contained to unit of origin. Fire cause under investigation.

Smoke alarms alerted 2 residents to a fire in their home, giving them ample time to escape. It took OPFD and Lenexa Fire about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control at 109th and Nieman, shortly after 7:30 this morning. No injuries reported and cause under investigation.

When a car is submerged, OPFD is ready. 🌊🚒 Three of our captains spent multiple days in NC mastering swift-water rescues. They practiced stabilizing vehicles, setting up rope rescue systems, and swimming directly into the current to pull trapped victims to safety! 💪

Reminder: Every April there's a State burn ban while the Flint Hills conducts their annual prairie burns. Open burn permits are suspended and burning yard waste, brush piles and non-pasture land is prohibited. (Recreational fires 3'x3' are still permitted.)

If you see smoke this morning around 71st and Hardy, don't be alarmed. An environmental group is conducting a prairie grass burn north of the SMSD Academic Achievement Center. They've obtained needed permits and are working to minimize impact on neighbors.
