With 160 acres of beautiful landscape to care for, our small and dedicated Landscapes Team, ably assisted by a talented team of Volunteers, have many trees to look after🌳 One of the tree maintenance techniques the team uses is Eco-Poling🌳 Eco-Poling is a term generally applied to the removal of the main scaffold branches from a dead or decaying mature tree but the stem is retained for wildlife habitat🐦 The main reason for eco-poling is to retain a dead or decaying tree for wildlife habitat while ensuring safety by removing the risk of falling branches🍃 Since the tree is dead or decaying, there is no specific time of year for eco-poling and it can be carried out at any time. Eco-poling can be carried out on most species of trees. Normally it would be used on mature trees with features such as decay pockets (eg. a decaying hole from a pruning wound) or splits in the stem, since these are typical habitats for fauna such as birds or bats🦇 Through a series of walks, talks, activities and special events we’ll be celebrating our trees this season and we would love for you to join us! 🌳Something you should hear: a celebration of trees at Painshill 📆Until 27 November 🍂Included with general entry and free for Painshill Members 🔗For further information and to book tickets, see painshill.co.uk/something-you-…

Originating from the North American East and parts of Mexico, the Black Tupelo displays extraordinary colours in autumn when its foliage turns purple and then scarlet red❤️ The tree also produces small blackish-blue fruits which are enjoyed by wildlife. They have a sour taste, giving the tree its common name, Sour Gum. Nyssa trees prefer damp, moist soil, and also woodland settings, leading to their scientific name. Nyssa was a Greek water nymph and in Latin sylvatica means ‘of the woodland’. Through a series of walks, talks, activities and special events we’ll be celebrating our trees this season and we would love for you to join us! 🌲Something you should hear: a celebration of trees at Painshill 📆Until 27 November 🍂Included with general entry and free for Painshill Members 🔗For further information and to book tickets, see painshill.co.uk/something-you-…

With 160 acres of beautiful landscape to care for, our small and dedicated Landscapes Team, ably assisted by a team of Volunteers, have many trees to look after. One of the tree maintenance techniques used is Coppicing. Coppicing is an ancient woodland management technique which involves cutting a tree or shrub back to its base (known as a ‘stool’), thereby encouraging the growth of new shoots. Traditionally, coppicing was used to ensure a regular supply of firewood and timber for garden and landscape structures such as fencing or plant supports. Today it is used to regenerate and rejuvenate shrubs and to promote the sustainability and biodiversity of woodland spaces. For example, coppicing certain trees encourages larger leaves to grow, while coppicing a woodland area introduces more sunlight onto the woodland floor enabling a wider variety of plants to flourish. All of the plant structures in the Kitchen Garden are made from Hazel coppiced within the Painshill landscape. Coppicing takes place from late September to early Spring when the plant is dormant. This both reduces risk of disease to the plant and encourages healthy growth come Spring. Many trees and shrubs are suitable for coppicing, such as Beech (Fagus sylvatica), Dogwood (Cornus), Elder (Sambucus), Hazel (Corylus), Indian Bean Tree (Catalpa) and Judas Tree (Cercis), all of which can be found at Painshill. Through a series of walks, talks, activities and special events we’ll be celebrating our trees this season and we would love for you to join us! 🌳Something you should hear: a celebration of trees at Painshill 📆Until 27 November 🍂Included with general entry and free for Painshill Members 🔗For further information and to book tickets, see painshill.co.uk/something-you-…

This beautiful weeping willow tree sits beside the lake with its leaves delicately draping down towards the water🌿 This type of tree was first introduced to England in the 18th century and so it is well suited to Painshill’s historic landscape. Visitors can see the Ruined Abbey in the distance, across the lake, from the weeping willow. In addition to being a stunning ornamental tree, the nectar-rich flowers of weeping willows provide a key source of food for insects such as bees and butterflies🦋 At Painshill, many visiting birds are also frequently seen around the waters of this pretty tree. Additionally, the bark of the weeping willow has traditionally been used for pain relief, as it contains salicin, a natural compound with properties similar to aspirin🩺 Visit Painshill this autumn to hear more about the intriguing stories of our trees🌲 Through a series of walks, talks, activities and special events we’ll be celebrating our trees this season and we would love for you to join us! 🌳Something you should hear: a celebration of trees at Painshill 📆Until 27 November 🍂Included with general entry and free for Painshill Members 🔗For further information and to book tickets, see painshill.co.uk/something-you-…

This #WellnessWednesday we are thinking about how trees help to clean the air which we breathe🌬️💚 Trees are natural air purifiers. Through the process of photosynthesis, they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen. But that’s not all, trees also trap dust, smoke and other pollutants on their leaves and bark, helping to make the air cleaner and healthier for us all🌳 Next time you walk through Painshill's landscape or sit under a leafy tree, take a deep breath to experience nature’s own air filter at work🍃 Visit Painshill this autumn to hear more about our wonderful trees, to learn why they are so important and to discover how they inspire artists; from our founder Charles Hamilton, to artists working today🌳 Through walks, talks, activities and special events we’ll be celebrating our trees this season and we would love for you to join us! 🌳Something you should hear: a celebration of trees at Painshill 📅Until 27 November 🍂Included with general entry and free for Painshill Members 🔗For further information and to book tickets, see painshill.co.uk/something-you-… #CleanAir #TreePower #NatureHeals #Photosynthesis #AirQuality #Painshill #Surrey #Trees
