Back from Australia for project on coral reef health with Maria Byrne of USyd and ankylosaurian comparative anatomy at Queensland Museum for new species description.

Also, the first paper of our PhD student Audrey Fan.

Contentious dietary ecology of bird-like troodontid dinosaurs reviewed. Integrating multiple lines of evidence, we found Troodon to mostly likely be omnivorous and discuss ancestral denonychosaurian and paravian diets. Open access paper below.

Microraptor, a Cretaceous bird-like dinosaur that lived about 125mya was a proficient glider that used its wings synergistically to boost lift generation. Its specialised hindwing shape helped to extract lift from the wingtip vortex, adding to flight efficiency. Open access paper below

🚨Our new study is out! We've put AI to good use, to classify and identify dinosaur footprints! Dinosaur footprints are more common than bones. But to figure out which dinosaur made a track, we need to do the Cinderella thing, and match a footprint to a foot. And that's hard.

🥳Dziś zapraszamy do podziwiania dzieła Pani Natalii Jagielskiej „Modernisation of Science Helps us to understand the Past”, które zdobyło drugą nagrodę w V edycji konkursu „Impresje o Chinach” pod hasłem „Chińska modernizacja w moich oczach” w kategorii Malarstwa. 🖌️Opis pracy:Pomimo powolnych początków na początku XX wieku, chińska paleontologia (nauka o prehistorycznych zwierzętach) eksplodowała na arenie międzynarodowej pod koniec lat 90. XX wieku, stając się potęgą w tej dziedzinie. Wyjątkowo zachowane skamieniałości i późniejsze badania zdominowały moją dziedzinę badań. Od pochodzenia życia po pióra dinozaurów, chińskie odkrycia zdominowały nagłówki gazet. Zmodernizowały i udoskonaliły paleontologię, a sposób, w jaki patrzymy na naszą wspólną przeszłość, wynikał z modernizacji chińskiej nauki. Urocze dinozaury z Chin sprawiły, że zainteresowałem się tą dziedziną, a także nowatorskie techniki stosowane do ich badania i ożywiania. Ten artykuł nawiązuje do „rewolucji dinozaurów” zapoczątkowanej przez nowe badania, przedstawiające słynnego chińskiego dinozaura o upierzeniu, Anchiornisa. Anchiornis jest jednym z pierwszych dinozaurów, których barwę potrafimy odtworzyć dzięki postępom w zrozumieniu biologii (pigmenty organiczne) i technologii (obrazowanie SEM). To to samo zwierzę, które przewodniczący Xi Jinping podarował prezydentowi Emmanuelowi Macronowi w 2024 roku. Dzięki tej modernizacji obecnie pracuję jako badacz i rekonstruuję zwierzęta z Chin sprzed 150 milionów lat, ale w stylach naśladujących starożytne techniki akwarelowe. Łączę stare z nowym.
