@sethlazar Are others "switching codes" for AI (vs person) ethics? e.g. for deontologists, a key objection to consequentialism depends on the moral significance of persons performing actions - an objection which (might) disappear so long as the agent is not a person

One of the great ironies of virtue ethics being such a prevalent feature of current approaches to alignment (besides the fact that a once card-carrying utilitarian has led the charge), is that it's the moral theory most closely associated with deeply felt, first-personal human experience. Deontologists and consequentialists would have no problem with a (non-sentient) AI model being able to apply their theories, for the most part. But for virtue ethicists it should be anathema.

@NWischoff Could this be (at least partially) related to where different demographics (in this case, sex) choose to exercise? e.g. inside/ outside; sport vs gym etc?

Drop into a new gym every time I travel (2-3x/month). The women are almost always fitter than the men no matter where I am. Barrys, Crossfit, Equinox. LA, SF, NYC. Seems a bit concerning.

Before reforming EIS, pushing more $$$ through the BBB, requiring pension funds to increase allocation to "British" private markets... we need to agree on a defn of a British co, and why supporting those cos (rather than cos in general) actually matters formventures.substack.com/p/backing-brit…

It's official. Will be 'summering' (to the extent a US wagie can) in Brittany with La Petite. On the menu, stone farmhouses and sailing (for her). Anyone with local favorites...it's time to chime in.

After generating $250K (last 2 months) I built a playbook for @lovable apps—and I’m giving it away. In just two months, we cracked the code to building apps with AI. I’ve distilled everything we learned into this single document. Comment "Build" and drop a follow. I’ll DM it to you. P.S. This will likely blow up, so give me some time to reply.

@andrewjscott @RachelReevesMP I thought HMT were discussing a 72.5% multiplier, which would apply to the effective income tax rate on your carry, taking the likely rate to c34%?

From 2027 @RachelReevesMP is making Carried Interest for Venture Capital to be income taxed, not a capital gain. Resulting in ~48% tax. You might think that's fair, but those profits are the result of often >10 years of work, investing across a portfolio of startups and after all funds have been returned to investors. This will hit Partners of tiny VCs firms as hard as it does those who manage billions. Most VC Partners don't manage billions and don't have fat salaries. We fund innovation at its earliest stages and wait decades to see the profits of our labour, which for many VC firms may not ever even come. As a VC investor I have spent more time getting no salary at all the last 12 years than I have been salaried, and survived from prior savings, angel investment returns and consulting. I feel gaslit by this @UKLabour Party's continual rhetoric around growth while they hammer small business with NI increases and send every one who is able, out of the country. Rich people, Private Equity firm owners, Non-Doms, can all leave the country taking their tax payments with them. That leaves everyone else to trudge on with a failing economy, stagnating because Rachel and @Keir_Starmer DO NOT understand business or how to grow an economy. You can't just magic growth just by talking about it. You actually have to choose policies which make the UK an attractive place. The best place. Only then will there be a higher tax take for the government to spend on those who are disadvantaged. And only then might we have any possibly chance of being "an AI superpower" or whatever the latest headline clickbait BS is the order of the day.

@ben_greenstone May not be a lie. 'Tax break' is one of those overused phrases that doesn't have a strict defn in tax law - and is sometimes used as synonymous with 'tax exemption' rather than the narrower defn of a tax that once existed, but has since been removed.

Again - no particular comment on whether the fees should be taxed - it’s Really Bad for our politicians to talk like this. There was no tax break, this is just a new tax. You’re the government - you can create new taxes if you like! Just don’t lie!
Rachel Reeves@RachelReevesMP

For too long children have been held back, not because of a lack of talent, but a lack of opportunity. I’m determined to change that. That starts with ending the tax break enjoyed by private schools so we can put more money into our state schools. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…

@anton_d_leicht @techpolicypress Really interesting. Do you think it follows that tech cos seeking lighter touch regulation (or some of them) might fabricate (or exaggerate) a sense of plateauing? E.g. by over-promising/ exaggerating likely pace of progress at first?

@torstenreil @HarryStebbings Definitely. Time is a bad excuse, and so is regulation. There are plenty of reasons that the UK lags the US (talent and risk appetite being two of the big ones) - regulation is a useful trope, but just isn't one of them.

I have had enough of Europeans saying that Europe has not performed simply because the ecosystem is not mature enough. We have had 20 years. At this stage it is not time. It is regulation, fragmentation of countries and languages, access to talent but lord, it is not time.

@BillAckman Interesting how much anecdote is relied upon, rather than data. Worth looking at EU Commission's data on crime trends, just for context. Might be helpful before using Europe to make the 'don't follow Europe's example - look what migration has done over there!' argument

An important speech which challenges the current global dogma on immigration. In sharing such a video, one cannot avoid being criticized but I share it nonetheless for it makes a powerful case against accepting an unlimited number of migrants into a host country. Immigration has contributed enormously to our country’s greatness as many have sacrificed much to come to the land of opportunity to pursue the American dream. And over that last 250 years we have attracted talented, motivated individuals and aspiring families that have helped build our country and make us great. My family has been an enormous beneficiary of being welcomed to America in the 1890s as my ancestors escaped persecution. In light of the benefits my family has received and the opportunities that we have had, I am preconditioned to want others escaping from hostile circumstances to have the same opportunities we have had. That said, an indiscriminately open border that does not intelligently screen migrants for entry is a recipe for disaster. The European migrant story as told by this Dutch politician is extremely concerning. I welcome the counterpoint arguments to the points she makes here. This is an issue that requires careful analysis and sensible policy. Unfortunately, we have neither today. The European migrant experience should be a wake up call for all of us.

@FinnMurphy12 A lot of regulators are just there to enforce regulation. e.g. Synthetic bio startups are calling for more regulators who are better informed about cell bio, to approve more novel foods more quickly. See the founders of Hoxton Farm etc.

The dearth of ideas in Irish politics is incredibly disappointing - Eamon Ryan calling for an expansion of the State in yesterday’s Irish Times & the major initiatives touted are the expansion of the regulatory state. Incentivise making things. Not burying us in bureaucracy.
