Fred Zinnemann’s The Nun’s Story (out today, 1959) is about more than Audrey Hepburn’s journey to becoming a twisted sister; the film hauntingly condemns the mass murder and enslavement in Belgian Congo that tests Audrey’s faith. Strong stuff for a “tasteful” religious flick.

The hits (Touch Me, Wishful Sinful) fine,but no cohesion on an album that feels forced,with mediocre material and a poor long song. The worst of the first 4,thank goodness followed by the masterpiece Hotel. I’ll go with the lemmings on their correct assessment.

@Noirchick1 I love Steiger, but I just happened upon him in Bronson movie Love and Bullets. Gawd was that awful. Steiger alright, but he was just earning grocery money in this crappy movie.

Remembering Rod Steiger who died this date 6/9/2002- brilliant in intense leading character roles - including his Oscar winning "In The Heat of the Night". He named two actors the best he ever worked with - Spencer Tracy & Sidney Poitier.. Are you a Steiger fan?

Vittorio de Sica (#BOTD) had funny acting roles in The 13 Chairs and Blood For Dracula; but as a director, the dude knew his tragedies! The post-war plight of children (Shoeshine) and seniors (Umberto D) hits home in his painful neorealist classics; a truly brilliant director.

They still have live shows and meetings there.

Hey movie group: I found another beauty of a movie theater, this one in the quaint town of Evanston Wyoming. It doesn’t appear to be a movie theater anymore but the building is still part of the town’s historic downtown. I would have loved to have watched films here in its heyday

Woody, just send a postcard! To Rome With Love (out today, 2012) feels like a throwback to Woody Allen’s zany comedies but it’s amazing how strained and uninspired the jokes are. An ensemble cast and 4 different stories, and it still feels like Woody on autopilot. And I love Rome

While common today, it must have startled 1940s audiences watching Double Indemnity (out today, 1944) to see two killers committing the perfect crime and getting away with it. The ending feels Hollywood (crime must be punished!) but Barbara Stanwyck’s icy Phyllis still shocks us.
