"Real Talk:
What’s the Plan for Hiring People with Felonies Now?"
So here we are, America—loud and clear, we’ve sent the message that it’s okay for someone with a felony record to be President of the United States. If that’s the standard we’re setting, then tell me: What are the states going to do to support everyone with a record trying to rebuild their lives?
For years, I’ve heard all the reasons why people with felonies “don’t deserve” a second chance, as if they should be defined forever by their past. I’ve faced the ugly comments and backlash for advocating on behalf of those who are doing everything they can to make things right and earn a place back in society. And yet, here we are, showing that if you have enough money and power, those same judgments don’t apply.
People with records—real people—are held to a different standard than the rich and powerful. Why the double standard? Why is it that one person’s mistakes can be brushed under the rug, while another’s shuts them out from opportunity for life?
It’s time to face this double standard. If we’re saying redemption is possible, then it’s possible for everyone. Real people with real lives deserve the same chance at rebuilding as anyone else. We can’t claim to believe in second chances and equality if we only apply them selectively.
