Despite being a known aspect of the job, continually applying for funding can pose significant mental health challenges. Securing grants is not simply about supporting a project, it is the responsibility of supporting the livelihoods and futures of all junior colleagues involved.
Emily J Chin@e8chin

One of the things they don't tell you about being a PI is how much you'll worry about funding. Actual, deep, visceral worry. It's not so much for *myself* (since I'm funded 9 months), but for students and postdocs. And in this current environment, the worry is only increasing.

NEW: Today, I’m releasing a Surgeon General’s Advisory on the causal link between alcohol consumption and increased cancer risk. Alcohol is the 3rd leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., contributing to about 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths each year.

Provinces given federal funding for health need to spend it on health. Everyone knows they are not. Attend an ER in the holidays and fully grasp that Ontario could fund more doctor hours but it chooses not to do so amidst obvious waiting room misery. @acoyne
Andrew Coyne 🇺🇦🇮🇱🇬🇪🇲🇩@acoyne

Had the provinces in fact spent all of those federal transfers "for health" on health, prov'l health spending would be 31 per cent higher than it is: $62 billion. Instead they used it to fund other things: spending on other programs, tax cuts, etc.

Lovely article by @deevybee from 1990 (!) discussing Type 1 error inflation due to p-hacking (simulating a 40% Type 1 error rate based on realistic flexibility), bad measurement, bad theory, and proposing prespecifying tests and replications as solutions. tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

Academics are often accused of jargon-filled writing that’s impossible to understand. After an analysis of scholarly work, @TheEconomist claims academic writing is getting harder to read — fuelling disengagement and claims of elitism. What do you think? linkedin.com/posts/philbaty…
