It’s the best math book I’ve read in years, the closest thing to capturing the magic of @JamesGleick’s Chaos. A true mathematical thriller! @KSHartnett

The first reader reviews of The Proof in the Code are trickling in. This one on @goodreads is one of my favorites. "Know what you are getting. This is touted as a Math and AI book. Yes, this sounds boring. However, this is not what you are getting. This book almost reads like a thriller. I don't know how the author did that."

Lean started as a side project to catch bugs in Microsoft Word. It may end up deciding how we trust math written by AI. New episode w/ @KSHartnett on his book The Proof in the Code, out now from @QuantaBks — link to listen ⬇️open.substack.com/pub/breakingma…

With the programming language Lean, “math proofs can be written in a different way than they have been in millennia.” The future of truth may lie not on paper but in code.

The software package known as Lean — which can verify mathematical proofs — is bringing a major shift to the math world. But not everyone is sure it is good for the field. On this episode of The Quanta Podcast, author @KSHartnett talks about his new book, “The Proof in the Code,” from @QuantaBks and @fsgbooks . Tune in: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the…

Today is publication day for my first book, The Proof in the Code. Writing it—by hand on a futon mattress in an otherwise empty closet off my bedroom—has been the most fulfilling experience of my professional life. There are two things I'd say about it: 1. It's fundamentally a character-driven story about a handful of people who dared to envision a new way of doing mathematics. They devoted their lives to a long-shot quest, and ultimately succeeded. 2. I can still barely believe the perfect confluence between Lean and our AI moment. When @Leonard41111588 began developing @leanprover in 2013, AI was science fiction; today, Lean may be key to improving AI reasoning and to trusting the code it produces. ` I hope you all enjoy the book, and I look forward to hearing from anyone who picks it up—whether you love it or not.

Software like Lean, which allows mathematical proofs to be written and checked as computer code, could usher in a new, more collaborative era of problem solving. One of its most prominent supporters is mathematician Terence Tao. quantamagazine.org/how-terry-tao-…
