This mess is on us, the electorate are screwing us all in expecting different outcomes but entrusting it to the same morons while 200 die every week waiting on hospital admission, children are subjected to unlawful surgical procedures, and 15,000 more people homeless since this shower came into government. #IrelandIsBroken

Nirvana played the Republic of Ireland on two tours, and the tiny gap between them captured their journey from relative obscurity to superstardom. Our story starts in the legendary venue Sir Henry's in Cork on the 20 August 1991. Nirvana got paid £100 to support an up and coming Sonic Youth. The 750 capacity venue was less than half full and most were having a jar in the Liberty Bar missing the support act entirely. They debuted Smells Like Teen Spirit that night. Below are a montage of pics taken by gig attendees Eamonn Cunningham and Rory Wales. They supported Sonic Youth the next in the Top Hat in Dún Laoghaire, with The Donnelly Brothers, Mexican Pets and Power of Dreams. After their set, they watched Sonic Youth with the crowd. Witnesses described Cobain as quiet and polite. The Seattle band unaware that in 3 weeks Nevermind would make them world famous. Cobain genuinely seemed to have an affinity for Cork. He told Guitar World he walked round the city feeling something close to spiritual, and that he believed his family were from there. His people the Cobanes were actually shoemakers who left Carrickmore in Tyrone in 1875. 10 months later Nirvana headlined the Point Depot on 21 June 1992, to 8,000 grungeheads supported by The Breeders and Teenage Fanclub. I`m no music journalist (thank christ) so although critics said it was a great gig I'd rather give you some quotes from the musicians themselves that night. Now remember Nirvana didnt mock their fans it was always a kind of slagging and banter. Dave Grohl, then drummer for Nirvana and now in some band named after NIH probes during WW2 teased the audience because the previous night’s booking was the Village People "So, you know who played last night? Yeah and you missed it! You’d rather see the Village People than us!" Bassist Krist Novoselic, co-founder of Nirvana, was intelligent enough to know his sacred calendar and said "It’s the Summer Solstice show, for all you hippies." Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl had some craic when a fan threw a bra onto the stage right after the band performed "Polly". The convo went: Grohl: "Kurt, wear it, wear it!" Cobain: "Aww, my first bra! Do you wanna wear it Dave?" Grohl: "I’ll wear it... Little do you know we get someone throw a bra up onstage every night and then we, this is a completely rehearsed routine." Cobain: "It’s all staged." Grohl actually ended up putting the bra on and wearing it for a portion of the concert and Cobain always looked great in a sundress. Also thats some commitment from the Irish fan. An affordable quality bra in Ireland in 1992 was about IR£15.00 up, thats nearly €38.50. I once used one to fix the asymmetric tachyon drive during a catastrophic breach and I'd a red mark on my containment tank for days. But I digress. Dave Grohl also introduced their recent hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with a sarcastic nod to singer-songwriter Tori Amos, who recently covered it: "This next song...we’re gonna have a special guest player. Tori Amos, come on Tori, come on out. We couldn’t bring the piano for this one." Their gig left a permanent mark on the local Dublin music scene, especially since the band would never play in Ireland again after this brief summer tour, which concluded the following night in Belfast. After Cobain's tragic and all too soon death in April 1994, a shattered Dave Grohl drove round the Ring of Kerry trying to figure out what to do next in his life and career. He spotted a young hitchhiker in the rain, slowed the car down and saw he was wearing a Kurt Cobain t-shirt, so sped off in grief without stopping. He's said since that seeing Kurt's face staring back at him in the middle of nowhere was the moment he decided to get back to work. The hitchhiker incidentally got tracked down (cause its bleedin Ireland) and he was a Cork lad named Lorcan Dunne. So technically some langer founded the Foo Fighters.
