I had the privilege of working with Adele and spending time with her in my early 20s - for around 3 years. Everything reported here is true, and the way she was targeted and stalked by police was nothing short of terrifying. I won’t go into further detail as this is her life - but those of us who knew her and worked alongside her in any capacity knew what was done to her - due to her work on this topic. I was only around 23 when I met Adele, very new to the field, having been doing this work since I was 19 - and what had happened to her, and what was still happening to her - taught me a great deal about police corruption and how systems can be weaponised extremely quickly against professionals who speak out about the ‘wrong’ thing. I never forgot the things they did to her - and I’ve since seen those tactics multiple times towards others.

SHE NAMED THE ABUSERS. THEY SENT HER ON A DIVERSITY COURSE. In 2001, solicitor Adele Weir was hired by Rotherham Council on a Home Office programme to research child sexual exploitation in the area. What she found was horrifying. Her ten-page mapping exercise named suspects, listed car registrations, and linked 54 abused children to one family. She estimated 270 victims at that point alone. She took her findings to senior South Yorkshire Police (@syptweet) officers. They told her the report was unhelpful. A police commander accused her of making up stories and deliberately lying. She was told to anonymise individuals and institutions. She was told she and her colleagues were exceeding their roles. Then files were stolen from the Risky Business office where she worked. No broken locks. No broken windows. A computer had been accessed. A police officer stopped her in her car and told her, in no uncertain terms, that people knew where she lived. Her work was sidelined. By 2007 the operation around her had effectively collapsed. Her reports were finally released by South Yorkshire Police (@syptweet) in 2015, only after a Freedom of Information request. The Jay Report, published in 2014, found that approximately 1,400 children had been abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. It concluded that by 2005 it was hard to believe senior officers and elected members were not aware of the problem. Zero senior officials were prosecuted. Zero. A researcher identified the abuse network in 2001 with names, car plates, and victim counts. The institution's response was to bury the paperwork and threaten the person who wrote it. Identity collapse and narrative control sit at the heart of reputational stalking. The stalker seeks to redefine who the victim is. To replace the victim’s real identity with a constructed one. A villain. A fraud. A threat. A manipulator. Mentally ill. A liar. Delusional. Abusive. Self-obsessed. Psychotic. The victim is then forced into a trap that many survivors describe as psychologically unbearable. If she stays silent about the things being said about her, her silence is framed as guilt. If she defends herself, she is framed as aggressive, defensive, or unstable. If she reports being stalked to the police or social workers, she is likely to be cast as delusional or attention-seeking. Whatever she does becomes folded back into the stalker’s story as proof. Any action she takes actually benefits the abuser/stalker. And it is one of the reasons this form of stalking can be so mind-bending for victims. It often feels as though reality itself has been distorted. As though you have been pulled into somebody else’s fantasy where you have been assigned a role you did not choose, and where every attempt to escape simply reinforces the script. I have spoken to many victims who describe this as psychological warfare. I understand why - and I agree with them. Reputational stalking, and pursuing the identity destruction of the victim is common - and extremely effective. And this happens across the spectrum. A mother in family court will have these tactics used against her by her abusive ex and his family - but the same tactics will be used against an A-List celebrity to ‘cancel’ them. Colleagues at work will do this to someone they are jealous of. Families do this to abuse victims who try to go to the police. It’s really so weird. If someone moves on and wishes you no harm - they just want you to leave them alone - do that. I don’t get it. But then again, I have a sense of self, interests, friends I actually respect, and goals.

Someone literally came to my old apartment late at night and tried to break in with a huge knife. I have the video / stills. He had a hood and a face covering, so didn’t care about the camera. So trust & believe that moving forward, I won’t be as gracious.

Character assassination is the last resort of those who've run out of legitimate arguments. They can't prove you wrong, so they try to make people question if you deserve to be heard at all.

Let’s be fair…I mean it is true that if the 1% pay taxes there will be less money for him to accept in the form of undeclared gifts. Also less money for him to get soda cans to violate.

1/5 HRW calls on Kuwaiti authorities to immediately and unconditionally release American-Kuwaiti journalist, Ahmed Shihab-Eldin. His detention is emblematic of the tightening space for free expression in Kuwait and the use of vaguely worded national security charges to silence journalists.

Someone said: the prettier and more intelligent a woman is, the uglier the rumors a narcissist will spread about her. A narcissist does not spread the worst lies about a woman who means nothing; they do it to the woman whose presence exposes them, threatens, and makes them feel small. Beauty gets attention. Intelligence gets respect. And when a woman carries both,a narcissist feels deeply overshadowed by her existence.they know they cannot easily dominate her through truth, so they try to poison how other people see her. If she is beautiful, they will try to make her look dirty.if she is intelligent, they will try to make her look unstable. If she is confident, they will try to make her look arrogant. If she is kind, they will try to make her look manipulative. They attack the exact quality that gives her value because they cannot tolerate the idea that people may see in her something they can never manufacture in themselves. They may not be able to take away her face, her mind, presence or her natural impact, but they will try to attach shame to it. They will try to make her beauty look suspicious, her intelligence dangerous, and her strength look unlikable. Why? Because if they cannot own her, they want to contaminate how she is perceived. And that is what survivors need to understand.

Stop hosting sessions where #BIPOC pour out their hearts about the org’s diversity issues and folks in orgs just gather to collect enough info to cover their tails. There should be action items or timelines. Make the conversations real. drmonicacox.com/podcast/episod…
