I have voted FOUR TIMES to fully fund DHS. It’s time for the Senate to do its job.

The Senate has left town instead of doing its job. Tonight, I voted for the fourth time to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Meanwhile, the Senate chamber sits empty. That is unacceptable.

I’m here as long as it takes to get this done right. The Senate’s bill is not enough. It leaves out border security and fails to fund efforts to combat child sex trafficking. That is unacceptable.

At a recent Homeland Security Committee hearing, I spoke about the real consequences of the border crisis and the importance of supporting the men and women who keep our communities safe. Today’s Senate action shows just how broken Washington has become. After weeks of delay that left 260,000 Americans without paychecks, they passed a bill that still fails to fully support ICE and CBP. We must fully fund DHS and stand behind those on the front lines protecting our communities.

This is exactly the kind of Washington dealmaking that Americans are sick of. For weeks, the Senate dragged its feet while 260,000 Americans went without paychecks. Now the Senate has finally passed something - that is a step in the right direction. But it still leaves out those who secure our border and prevent child sex trafficking. As someone who currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, I know how demanding these missions can be and how much sacrifice they require. That’s why I introduced the National Guard Protective Zone Act, to ensure Guardsmen are protected while serving our country at home. It was an honor to thank them personally for their service and dedication. 🇺🇸

The American people deserve better. When some in Washington choose politics over paying those who protect us, it’s misguided and puts our communities at risk.

I recently had the opportunity to meet with General Stubbs, Director of the Army National Guard, and General Raines, Senior Advisor to the Chief of the National Guard Bureau, to discuss the important role the National Guard plays in protecting our communities. Conversations like these reinforce why I introduced the National Guard Protective Zone Act, legislation to ensure our Guardsmen are protected from harassment or assault while carrying out their missions here at home.
