On National Farmworker Day, I'm grateful for the organizations that support our farmworkers like Puente de la Costa Sur, ALAS, and Coastside Hope. Earlier this year, I brought Puente’s Rita Mancera Hernandez to the State of the Union to highlight her leadership and work in our community. We must expand access to care, dignified housing, and pathways to legal status for hardworking farmworker families.

On National Farmworkers Day, we thank the hard-working community members whose daily commitment sustain each of us by putting food on our tables. Today, we honor  the movement that farmworkers built, inspiring generations that fight for social justice.

The American people deserve better.

We had a bipartisan path forward to pay TSA, Coast Guard, FEMA, and other law-abiding DHS personnel, approved by the Senate and its Republican leadership. Speaker Mike Johnson refused to take it up for a vote of our House–likely for fear that it would be broadly adopted. That Senate bill copied precisely the approach of the legislation that I cosponsored a month ago, but upon which Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to allow a vote on the House floor. Last week, I met with TSA agents at San José Mineta International Airport who keep our travelling citizens safe. They’re showing up every day without pay, even as they struggle to afford the gas to get to work. They deserve better. The Coast Guard employees vigilantly watching our shores deserve better. The employees at FEMA helping Americans recover from disasters deserve better. Above all, the American people deserve better. Speaker Mike Johnson has demonstrated once again that he cannot lead this House. It’s long past time for new leadership in Congress.

Saturday morning, I met with many hard-working TSA agents at San José Mineta International Airport who keep our country safe—and they’re consistently showing up, without pay, as they struggle afford the gas to get to work. Weeks ago, I cosponsored a bill to pay TSA, the Coast Guard, and other law-abiding DHS personnel. 175 colleagues have signed on a discharge petition to force an unwilling Speaker Johnson to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. We need 44 more members to sign on to get these paychecks out the door.

Happy Nowruz! Today, many Persian Americans mark this holiday with heavy hearts, separated from their loved ones during this ongoing conflict. Our community wraps our arms around each of our neighbors and wishes you a blessed new year of health, prosperity, and renewed hope for peace and brighter days ahead.

As Ramadan draws to a close, we mark Eid al-Fitr—a time that reflects a month of fasting, reflection, and spiritual renewal. Amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East, this period has been especially heavy for many in our Muslim communities. We extend our wishes for strength and peace to our neighbors and send our support to all those affected around the world.

Hardworking TSA officers, Coast Guard, and other law-abiding DHS workers could have a paycheck today if more of my colleagues joined me and 175 House Democrats to force a vote on our bill to get their paychecks out the door. Not a single Republican has joined us. We need to get to 218. Let’s get people paid.
