The Secretary of Defense has always been a civilian for a reason. Not ceremonial. Structural. The guardrail between democratic governance and military power runs through that office. The idea being a civilian SecDef was the guardrail. The system never considered what if the SecDef is the madman? Now generals who push back on reckless Hegseth decisions get fired. No check on Hegseth’s power whatsoever. The founders built a system of checks. They didn’t build a check on the checker. That’s not just America’s problem anymore.
