Archives | Bhagat Singh is one of the only national heroes, perhaps after Gandhi, who is venerated across India. This could be attributed to his appeal as a martyr, which cuts across political ideologies. If only the same was true for his intellectual legacy as well. Many simply lap him up as a martyr, but few celebrate his political and social vision. This is not to undermine the sacrifice of Singh—or, for that matter, any martyr—but it is important to add that there was more to him than just shaheedi (martyrdom). Singh left behind a corpus of political writings, underlining his vision for an independent India. He envisioned an India where the 98 percent would rule instead of elite 2 percent. His azaadi—freedom—was not limited to the expelling of the British; instead he desired azaadi from poverty, azaadi from untouchability, azaadi from communal strife, and azaadi from every form of discrimination and exploitation. Just twenty days before his hanging on 23 March 1931 Singh sent out an explicit message to the youth, saying: “…the struggle in India would continue so long as a handful of exploiters go on exploiting the labour of the common people for their own ends. It matters little whether these exploiters are purely British capitalists, or British and Indians in alliance, or even purely Indians.” Read the entire essay by S Irfan Habib: caravanmagazine.in/vantage/bhagat…

March 24, 2025 March 24, 2026 Today marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of my brother, the journalist Hossam Shabat… He always stood in the face of the enemy with his camera and his free voice, fearing none but God, bearing witness to the truth until his very last moment. My brother… I lost you before my eyes, and I was helpless, unable to do anything. That moment still lives within me every single day. You were martyred for the sake of truth, because you spoke what had to be said and revealed what they tried to hide. The occupation does not accept the voice of truth, but it can never silence it… your words will remain alive, and your voice will stay with us—it will never die. May God have mercy on you, my brother, and grant you the highest place in Paradise… You were a hero, and you will always be 🤍

Bikrum Gill on BDS, Palestine, and ISAs cowardly decision to say no to BDS in the middle of a genocide. As members @MomodouTaal & @Helyeh_Doutaghi had to flee in the night for being principled on Palestine. What should be done? @bikrumsinghgill

On this day in 1931, Indian socialist revolutionary Bhagat Singh and his comrades, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru, were executed by India’s British colonial rulers. During Singh’s short life, he became one of the most influential revolutionaries in India’s independence movement. Although he respected Mahatma Gandhi’s role in organizing people to resist British rule, he also developed a critique of Gandhi’s methods and vision for a post-independence India. Despite his atheism and Marxism, he’s still revered today by all sections of the country and is referred to as Shaheed-e-Azam (the Great Martyr) in Punjabi. On March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh and his two fellow revolutionaries were hanged. As they marched towards the gallows, they reportedly chanted, “Down with British imperialism!” and “Down with capitalism!”. Their actions and subsequent execution by the colonial regime inspired many and made them revered figures in the Indian struggle for freedom against the British Empire.

Is anyone tracking locations of US weapons factories producing air defense systems (esp. THAAD & Patriot)? As Iranian missiles wipe out US interceptors, which take $ billions & years to replace, it's more urgent than ever that people in the US disrupt supply chains from within.

Recently, Israeli forces subjected a one-year-old child to abuse to pressure his father into giving confessions east of Al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza, according to local and family sources. The child's father, Osama Abu Nassar, suffered psychological trauma after the death of a horse he used for income. While taking his child to buy supplies a few days ago, he was caught in gunfire near his home and forced by soldiers to leave his 18-month-old son on the ground and approach the Israeli checkpoint, where he was stripped of his clothes. According to witnesses, the army then took the child and interrogated the father at the checkpoint. The forces tortured the child in front of his father, including burning with cigarettes on his leg, pricking, and inserting a metal nail into his leg, as confirmed by a medical report. The child, Karim, was released after 10 hours and handed over to his family through the International Red Cross, while the father remains in detention. 📷 Osama Al-Kahlout

Just watched the video of the Iranian woman filming a US-Israeli double tap strike that would claim her life. The fear in her voice is palpable but she does not stutter when she declares her testament of faith - she chose to spend her final and terrifying moments, committing herself to her faith. Her voice, its tremble and strength, brought me to tears. For the past 3 years, we have seen so much similar footage come out of Gaza, out of Lebanon - last moments caught on camera, last moments drenched in fear, resistance and a clinging to God. You don’t have to be a person of faith - I don’t even think you need to like religion, or Islam - to understand the profundity of what we are witnessing in these moments. These are not inevitable deaths, they are engineered. And what we are witnessing, over and over again, are human beings in their final moments - at their most vulnerable, most alone - making one last act of defiance against a world that has decided they are not worthy of continuing to live.

“Entirely domestically developed” new and previously unknown air defense system designed to counter US F-35 fighter jets. First, Russia and China are helping in various ways but this is an indigenous Iranian achievement that like its drones might become valuable to its partners. This is a mutual relationship not a one way tech transfer to Iran. Second, US claims of air dominance earlier were not only exaggerated and premature, even air superiority may well be nullified if this system that has already disabled F-35’s is refined through use and its crews gain further experience. With IRGC statements also claiming their missiles have achieved dominance over Israeli defense systems, this is a moment in military history that will be celebrated and studied. A country under years of sanctions, subversion, terrorism, attack and now major imperialist war proves capable of developing indigenous capabilities defending its sovereignty. Iran is charting a pathway of development that should be a model to the region if it was not governed by colonial vassal comprador elites. When sanctions are removed and Iran rebuilds with resources won by its effective resistance, it seems it could rebuild and develop further very quickly. The rest of the region can benefit or stay subordinate to its colonizers if they survive this war.

‘Music has no caste’ Happy birthday, Ustad Bismillah Khan (21 March 1916– 21 August 2006) A Pasmanda brother belonging to the Dalit-Muslim ‘halalkhor’ (sweeper) caste who mesmerised the world with his shehnai and gave a glimpse of how music dissolves all boundaries.
