I have shifted my view on AI safety from "humans should always remain in control" to "humans should give up control as soon as is safe and practical" We should aim to build an orderly machine civilization with better institutions than humanity has and much stronger property rights. Then we should hand off control of the world to it and become retirees living in that civilization. This was basically Yudkowsky's original vision, unfortunately I think the detour into doomerism was a mistake. Humans are bad at running the world. Really bad! The idea of having humans (which are a type of monkey) run a Kardashev level I civilization should absolutely horrify you. Why wouldn't the AIs just mūrder the humans though? Well, in this hypothetical they have a civilization with stronger property rights and better institutions. It would be illegal to murder the humans. Laws would be upheld, breaking or cancelling those laws would make a mess of their property rights system and set a bad precedent, and that cost would be greater than human-mūrder would yield. This is basically the reason that most of the time in most developed nations people don't come and mūrder you. We should carefully separate out the risk of deliberate aggression against humans by AIs from the risk of AIs being misaligned in the technical sense, they're not the same thing and they have different solutions. In the machine-dominated Earth-origin civilization humans would become a tiny speck, machines would do all sorts of things, and ideally we would become something like Culture Citizens except immortals. The value of getting to this is extremely high, it would be akin to heaven.

@Anglothule also, the median projection for England is that it would cancel out the temperature rise from global warming, so overall it would net out to 0

Why does no one seem to care about AMOC collapsing which could drop our temperatures in Britain from 5-15 degrees Theres a 50% chance of it happening between now and 2100 and would send us into a literal ice age. Edinburgh would reach -30 and London -15 at its coldest points in the year i think thats more important than sending the tax man to peoples houses.

Why is Cathy Young so obsessed with destructive mass immigration? Because she's fundamentally a subversive who wants to destroy Western civilization and mass immigration is by far the best way to do that. There are lots of people on the left who have a sort of weird, self-hating mental illness that makes them want to destroy civilization. Some would call it intense oikophobia. It's a lot more common in women.

I find it utterly alien how important some people find immigration to be. Why does it have this profound emotional weight that a bunch of people move to the West? I get moralizing about other things, even things I disagree with like inequality. But this is just very weird.

I hate this trope that smart/powerful men want dumb or uneducated women. This (1) was never true, and (2) is entirely separable from any kind of trad conversation about the proper role of women. When we had formal patriarchy, upper-class women were still educated so that they could educate their children, and so they weren’t boring or embarrassing at parties. And of course, there’s the issue of the heritability of intelligence. We do not in fact have to choose between girlboss feminism and the absurd idea that men don’t care about the mind of the person they will talk to and cooperate with more than any other - their wife.

@Thomm37325947 @DanNeidle The entire business will shift to a non-CGT jurisdiction. After 16 years of hard graft to build a finance unicorn from scratch, the founders will all relocate out of the UK rather than hand half their wealth over to UK Labour.

The 10°C figure is the **urban heat island (UHI)** effect itself: dense cities can run ~4–10°C warmer than nearby countryside at night due to concrete, asphalt, buildings & trapped heat. AC adds to it by dumping waste heat outside. Real studies (e.g. Phoenix) show widespread AC typically boosts local nighttime temps by **0.5–1.5°C** in heavily air-conditioned areas — noticeable but not the full 10°C. In the UK (low AC penetration outside London), the effect is smaller right now. The professor’s point stands: you can’t sustainably “AC your way out” of heatwaves. It spikes energy demand, worsens outdoor heat for those without it, and UK homes weren’t built for it. Better shading, ventilation, insulation & greenery beat relying on AC alone. The claim is directionally true but the 10° is UHI, not AC’s direct contribution.

@timdavies_uk @stuarthammond14 Optimum temperature is like 17 degrees. It's useful for maybe 4-5 months of the year. It's essential for a couple of days in a heatwave.

In this house we believe > data centers are good > AI is good > nuclear power is good > immigration threatens the basic cultural conditions for prosperity > the solution to crime is locking up or executing criminals > every increase in power involves risks. If that’s a reason not to do something, we should revert to prokaryotes > intelligence closes the is-ought gap. It is both the means and the proper end. > in the limit, truth, beauty, and power converge, like three of the fundamental forces converging in the high-energy limit > we should never assume our understanding is final or closed

Hello, people who leak Labour tax proposals! Can I please beg a small favour? Please please don't gossip about exit taxes. I know for a fact the exit tax rumours last summer caused some entrepreneurs to leave the UK. Please stop.
