"Trucking is obviously resistant to outsourcing, and self-driving technology has yet to replace any drivers. Still, its pay, prestige, and working conditions have tumbled over the past several decades." My in-depth look at the Motor Carrier Act of 1980: businessinsider.com/truck-driver-s…

My takeaway: A Bay Area tech bro got one shotted by a bipolar goth girl. It broke him so much he went on a fever dream gonzo search for what happened to flyover country. The irony on why these changes are fueled by his very work is lost on him. Years later he’ll still remember his escapades amongst the hipsters of Portland when he does a TEDx talk he paid for out of pocket.

I found the infamous American Diner Gothic piece quite insightful if occasionally boorish. I spent much of my Midwestern adolescence on Tumblr. I was not connected to a stimulating cultural dialogue in my hometown so I found it online — something that wouldn’t have been possible had I been born 20 years earlier. The piece discussed personal cultural consumption rather than retail infrastructure but I’d like to call that out. I went back to Metro Detroit last week and did notice there were quite a bit of … unexpected storefronts. Claw machine depots, stretching studios, dispensaries. I went to a multinational conveyer belt sushi spot; it was terrible. These businesses tend to employ relatively few people and charge high prices for mass produced products. They’re also losing favor in NYC; I saw an IG reel yesterday of an Asian American woman bemoaning the proliferation of boba spots in Chinatown over locally-owned spots. Growing up, I loved visiting NYC for novelty. Now, I prefer it for its authenticity. My hometown used to be locally-owned pharmacies, bakeries, banks, and hair salons. That’s going away. Middle America is getting filled up by PE-backed retail. Now NYC has the cute-locally-owned-Main-Street-USA storefronts I recall from my childhood.

No health insurance plan is flawless. What’s stopping me from having TWO health insurance plans… so I can form a more comprehensive coverage mosaic?

I know Silicon Valley startups don't want to hear this..... But the combination of someone in the trades with deep domain expertise and Claude Code will run circles around your generic software. I talked to Cory LaChance this morning, a mechanical engineer in industrial piping construction in Houston. He normally works with chemical plants and refineries, but now he also works with the terminal He reached out in a DM a few days ago and I was so fired up by his story, I asked him if we could record the conversation and share it. He built a full application that industrial contractors are using every day. It reads piping isometric drawings and automatically extracts every weld count, every material spec, every commodity code. Work that took 10 minutes per drawing now takes 60 seconds. It can do 100 drawings in five minutes, saving days of time. His co-workers are all mind blown, and when he talks to them, it's like they are speaking different languages. His fabrication shop uses it daily, and he built the entire thing in 8 weeks. During those 8 weeks he also had to learn everything about Claude Code, the terminal, VS Code, everything. My favorite quote from him was when he said, "I literally did this with zero outside help other than the AI. My favorite tools are screenshots, step by step instructions and asking Claude to explain things like I'm five." Every trades worker with deep expertise and a willingness to sit down with Claude Code for a few weekends is now a potential software founder. I can't wait to meet more people like Cory.

I don’t fully understand the cutesy leftist adoration of China. The UN estimates that the Chinese government has had 13.75 million Uyghurs and 650k Tibetans in forced labor camps since 2020. I am unclear why people who otherwise might be repulsed by the repression of ethnic minorities or slavery pretend that China is this amazing country.

New England heats with fuel oil. The Southeast heats with electricity. The Midwest heats with natural gas. Same country, completely different energy systems. Every county in one map:

Nozomi IIjima's "Scoffing Pig" is maybe most tragic photobook I've seen. She follows pigs on a farm, showing how the pigs understand the horror of which they are a part.

The mechanics of financed investing are one of the primary benefits of a private banking relationship. It's no secret that it takes money to make money, but maybe you didn't know that many private banking clients are given extremely generous loan terms to enhance their returns

People say American cities can’t build infrastructure but Atlanta has a fully automated subway with platform screen doors and 90 second headways that serves a quarter million trips a day. It’s just in their airport.
