It's been a crazy week on social media, so hello to all my new followers! I'm a Sun scientist researching solar flares, and value the importance of communicating the facts (and combating the fiction) of that science to the world. My first book, The Sun, was published last year ☀️

I’m at the historic Harnack House in Berlin this week for a joint meeting between ESA, NASA & Indian space missions to research the Sun. Today I presented my recently-published work on measurements of unprecedented small-scale structures seen during solar flares!

I just discovered that a video of me discussing solar activity and aurora (filmed for Associated Press) aired in Taiwan and Hong Kong earlier this year. I had no idea!

Today the Sun released an eruptive M2.8-class #SolarFlare! This follows a quiet month on the Sun, so is excitement over this low M-class event an early look into how solar min will feel? The flare did produce an (Earth-directed?) eruption, so perhaps the excitement is justified!

I’m “goated”, according to anonymous student feedback for a class I’m teaching this semester. Can I use this screenshot as a letter of recommendation for every future job I apply for?

Pro tip: if you’re flying from North America to Europe, always book a window seat on the left side of the plane!

Quick: can you name ANY living scientist? In a 2025 survey of American adults, only 1-in-3 said they could. Of these, 7%+ named a dead scientist (Einstein/Hawking), and 3% named Elon Musk (arguably not a scientist). Can you name one not on this list?

@utdfanatix The objective of almost all scientists (even the atheist ones), is certainly *not* to "disprove God"!

@RyanJFrench well a huge chunk of the worlds population are somewhat religious and the science world is largely made it its mission to disprove faith in God, as long as these divides are separated there will be no trust, also science will never be able to prove consciousness ever

Current levels of public distrust across science saddens me. The question posed below is a valid one, but a quick Google search would reveal the answer. Instead? 20k people (current post likes) thinking they know better than the experts/evidence. What can scientists do better?

Been watching Dinosaurs on Netflix. There’s no possible way they know half this shit about dinosaurs. Found some bones in the ground & they know which ones used to a mating dance 245 million years ago?

For the survey, the living scientist didn't even need to be a famous one. It could have been someone you knew personally (your cousin Dave) or even somebody you follow online.

@utdfanatix Although I am not religious, many of my scientific colleagues are! In fact, a quick google search reveals that 30-50% of scientists believe in a god – you can be religious and still understand the scientific method.

@electricfoo In my opinion we had two peaks relatively close together in early 2023 and 2014! I can’t foresee another substantial sustained peak happening now.

@RyanJFrench Are there any signs or chances of a ‘twin peaks’ solar cycle like last time? 2011 and 2014?

My first first post is live for my "Sunny-Sci'd Up" Substack! I dive into solar activity throughout February 2026, discussing low sunspot numbers, a giant solar flare, a barely-viewed solar eclipse – and more! (Link below)

Here's the aftermath of an X-class solar flare, with the Earth for scale. Captured from my backyard in Arizona.

(Yes, this is not necessarily surprising – but fun to see the comparison in the data. For example, the previously solar cycle shows far greater interest in solar flares, despite it being a weaker cycle with fewer large events).

Fun fact: people googling ‘Solar Flare’ is a great measure of the Sun’s 11-year solar cycle!
