Producing timely poverty data is hard. Producing reliable real-time estimates is even harder.
This new @WorldBankGroup blog draws lessons from a global survey-to-survey imputation challenge and highlights a key issue we often underestimate: selecting the right model can be as difficult as building it.
A few takeaways:
– Many participants failed to choose their best-performing model, even when they had already developed it
– Strong validation results did not consistently translate into better real-world performance
– Models trained on past data struggled to capture poverty dynamics during shocks like COVID
The implication is important for policy: when economic relationships shift, models can produce results that look plausible, but are wrong.
