Insiders told TheCable that Obi left the summit dissatisfied — not because of what was said — but because of what was left unsaid. At the heart of his concern is zoning, the long-standing principle of rotating power between Nigeria’s regions. For @PeterObi and many southern stakeholders, any credible opposition arrangement must explicitly address this issue. thecable.ng/the-insider-wh…

THE INSIDER: Why Obi was not impressed with ‘Ibadan declaration’ There was an air of cautious optimism on Saturday when opposition heavyweights gathered in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, for what many had billed as a defining moment ahead of the 2027 elections. The All Opposition Political Party Leaders summit, chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and hosted by Seyi Makinde, Oyo governor, brought together former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso (former governor of Kano), Rotimi Amaechi (former governor of Rivers), @PeterObi (former governor of Anambra), and other leaders. thecable.ng/the-insider-wh…

Reps public accounts committee chair tells TheCable federation account not audited since 2021 The federation account was last audited in 2021, Bamidele Salam, chairman of the house of representatives committee on public accounts, has informed TheCable. Salam said the absence of up-to-date audited financial reports makes it difficult for potential investors to access reliable information about Nigeria’s public finances. “I want to tell you that the last time the account of the Federation of Nigeria was audited was 2021. That’s the report that you have. For the auditing of the federation account itself, the accountant-general for the federation will come up with excuses for what is causing the delays,” he said. thecable.ng/reps-public-ac…

FACT CHECK: Igini’s claim incorrect. Ballot paper validation in Electoral Act 2026 existed in 2022 law Mike Igini, a former resident electoral commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has claimed that the Electoral Act 2026 contains a new provision granting presiding officers the discretion to accept or reject ballot papers that do not bear the official mark prescribed by the electoral body. THE CLAIM Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Wednesday, Igini said section 63 of the Electoral Act 2026, which deals with ballot papers, grants excessive discretion to presiding officers. A presiding officer, better known as a PO, is the primary election official responsible for managing a polling station on election day. thecable.ng/fact-check-igi… #FactCheck

SIMON KOLAWOLE: "Now, this is where the intrigue becomes more thrilling. If APC goes for Kwara North or South, Saraki will smell blood. The PDP can decide to field a candidate from Kwara Central and pick a running mate from North or South as a countermove, like a game of chess. This may give the APC a big fight. The ruling party could decide to field a candidate from Kwara Central again in order to neutralise Saraki, but the “Yoruba Agenda” would end up in the mud as Kwara South may revolt against APC — and that means doing anti-party. As things stand, it is the APC that has the biggest issues in its hands. My sense is that Saraki saw this opening and is already strategising to reverse “Otoge” after eight years." thecable.ng/abdulrazaq-vs-…

THE INSIDER: How Wale Edun lost out to the Chagourys and finally bit the dust President Bola Tinubu publicly wished several Nigerians a happy birthday this week — including Stella Okotete, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Shola Oshunkeye, and Orji Uzor Kalu. Conspicuously missing from his list was Wale Edun, his minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy who clocked the landmark 70 on April 20. A day later, he fired Edun from his cabinet. But many Aso Rock insiders were not surprised by the turn of events — it was always coming. “The president asked Edun to leave honourably in October last year but he lobbied to keep his position,” an insider told TheCable. “Although he stayed back, the president told his aides: ‘As far as I am concerned, I have done send-off for Wale already.’ But for some reason, Edun managed to hang on.”

DID YOU KNOW? Electoral Act 2026 limits courts from entertaining suits on party internal affairs For years, Nigerian politicians have turned to the courts to resolve internal party disputes, from leadership tussles to candidate nominations.  This pattern has shaped electoral outcomes and, at times, destabilised the democratic process. However, the Electoral Act 2026 insulates party affairs from judicial interference. thecable.ng/did-you-know-e…
