I wrote about Sandbar, the NYC startup looking to ship an AI note-taking ring, Stream, this summer. Part of what I found interesting about it is the wider race to try different form functions: earbuds, necklace, pin, wristband, now ring. But part is also that Stream is meant to be fully single-player and non-invasive. You raise your finger to talk to the ring in a conspicuous, les s surveillance-y way; Stream only listens to your voice, when you're actively tapping it, instead of being always-on. Does that mean you won't get weird looks on the subway? I'm not sure -- and candidly not sure I'd use it every day. But the care that founder @minafahmi has put into the product's form and function makes me think they have a shot.

EXCLUSIVE: AI startup Sandbar has raised $23M in Series A funding for its note-taking smart ring, Stream, launching widely this summer. I spoke to CEO Mina Fahmi (@minafahmi) about his vision for a voice interface for your thoughts -- and for working with AI agents. "The thing that gets me excited is the promise of technology as an augmentation of the individual, that places the human in control,” he tells @UpstartsMediaCo.

Founder spotlight from our January Shortlist Founder Showcase at @betaworks 🎥 @sandbar is rethinking how we capture and interact with our thoughts - starting with a ring. @minafahmi walked us through how Sandbar is building interfaces that act as extensions of the self. Wearable, voice-first, and intentionally designed to fade into daily life rather than demand attention. This is the kind of product that makes you pause — simple, tangible, and quietly powerful. Exactly the type of founder + vision we aim to spotlight on the Shortlist stage. If you were in the room, you felt it. If you weren’t — this video gives a glimpse. Excited to see what the Sandbar team builds next. (P.S. They're hiring 😉) Thank you Boundless Creative for the amazing visuals!!

I visited @minafahmi at the @sandbar office in NYC, saw a demo of the unreleased product as well as the iterations that came before. It was obvious that the product was built with intention, craft, aesthetic, and infused with the creator's persona. I believe this will be an intangible yet defensible moat as AI democratizes the barrier to creation. Currently, consumer AI hardware largely executes the same core workflow. It listens, transcribes, summarizes, and remembers for the user. Yet the differences lie in the form factor and the persona it serves. Plaud adopts the shape of a pin and appeals to white-collar professionals. Fried is a pendant, targeting those seeking emotional companionship. And Sandbar chose to be a ring, inspired by the "eclectic diversity" of NYC. Underneath the aesthetics, Sandbar is an "extension of the self", helping people remember, reflect, and create by hearing their inner voice. This might not resonate with everyone. But for those whose minds work this way, it adheres almost too perfectly. I see a future where the products we use are one-size-fits-all solutions, but rather filled with character & quirks.
