Joint Statement: Santa Monica Police Department & @SMMUSD May 7, 2026 Reports of a potential threat at Santa Monica High School were thoroughly investigated today and determined to be unfounded. There is no credible threat to the campus, and no injuries have been reported. At approximately 11:53 a.m., the Santa Monica Police Department was notified of a potential threat reported to school officials at Santa Monica High School. School Resource Officers and additional personnel responded immediately and coordinated with school administrators who made the decision to implement a temporary shelter-in-place out of an abundance of caution. Officers conducted a systematic search of the campus and surrounding area while maintaining a high-visibility presence. The shelter-in-place was lifted at approximately 1:20 p.m., and normal school operations have resumed. Officers will remain on campus to provide continued reassurance and support. The investigation into the source of the calls remains ongoing. Threats involving schools are taken seriously, and individuals responsible for making false or threatening reports will be held accountable.

Our SMPD Explorers spent the weekend in Sacramento competing in the CHP Statewide Explorer Competition—representing #SantaMonica with professionalism, teamwork, and skill. Hosted by the California Highway Patrol, the event brought together Explorer posts from across the state for hands-on scenarios and friendly competition. Throughout the weekend, our Explorers put their skills to the test in a variety of law enforcement-based challenges designed to build leadership, confidence, and discipline—while also connecting with peers from agencies across California and strengthening the camaraderie that defines the program. Thinking about a career in law enforcement? This is where it starts. #SMPD #Explorers #FutureOfPolicing

On Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Santa Monica Police Department will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. For more than a decade, the event has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or expired—that too often become a gateway to addiction. Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded medications at close to 4,200 local drop-off locations nationwide. What: National Prescription Drug Take Back Day When: Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Where: Public Safety Facility, 333 Olympic Drive, Santa Monica, CA 90401 Since 2010, DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has provided an easy and accessible way to dispose of medications that could pose a threat if misused. Over the past 16 years, National Prescription Take Back Day has removed more than 20 million pounds of unwanted medications from communities across the United States. Opioids, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine, are among the most misused prescription pain medications, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage. For more information and to find a collection site near you, visit DEATakeBack.com.
