Funnily enough, I had the complete opposite experience with Argentina fans. It’s funny because I always told myself that I would only support Argentina while Messi played for them. However, this World Cup changed everything for me. I had once fallen victim to the propaganda about Argentines being arrogant, rejecting being Latino, etc. I was fortunate enough to attend three Argentina games this World Cup (vs. Egypt/Switzerland/England) and truly learned what great people they are and how proud that they are of their country. The few of you on here who know me irl know that I’m quite sociable, so I naturally interacted with many Argentines around the stadiums. Many of whom could tell that I wasn’t Argentine because of my accent, but every single one embraced me as one of them because, in the words of the old Argentine man I met in Kansas City, “todos somos hermanos latinos.” I learned their songs and chants, celebrated incredible goals with them, and shared hugs with strangers I’d never met before. The affection that the Argentine public showed me in these last two weeks will stay with me forever. I don’t think I can ever stop being a fan now…

Portugal — mi país, al que amo con toda el alma — nunca ganó un Mundial. Nunca llegó a una final. Nunca estuvo ni cerca de donde Argentina estuvo hoy. Y Argentina llora porque quedó segundo. 😔 Pero lo entiendo. De verdad lo entiendo. Porque en los últimos 12 años Argentina jugó 3 finales de Mundial. Ganó 1. Tiene 3 títulos mundiales en total. Eso es algo extraordinario que casi ningún país en la historia del fútbol puede decir. Cuando tenés ese nivel — cuando tu pueblo espera eso de vos — quedar segundo duele como una derrota. Y eso no es debilidad. Es la exigencia de un pueblo que sabe lo grande que es. No lloran porque perdieron. Lloran porque aman demasiado. Porque sienten demasiado. Porque viven todo con una intensidad que el resto del mundo perdió hace tiempo y ya no sabe cómo recuperar. People acting like Argentina is some thugged out team of animals shows no one used to watch the game. Sergio Ramos was a bigger thug than this entire Argentina team combined. Real Madrid used to butcher Messi and Barcelona. People have gotten so used to this soft weenie style of soccer that was taken over to protect their product. The game has to be soft now because every other kid player costs 60m and your stars now all get bought at 100m+. Can’t be having a Ramos or Pepi butchering 200m worth of players every game anymore.
