Men don’t fear vulnerability itself. What men truly fear is the misinterpretation of their vulnerability. Pain is private, but interpretation is public…and once our words are misunderstood, we can’t take them back. As a man gains more responsibilities, silence becomes less of a choice and more of a necessity. He isn’t allowed to mention his sacrifices because it’s seen as keeping score. So he keeps making them quietly, hoping he’ll receive some reward somehow, somewhere. He hopes someone will acknowledge his efforts and simply say “thank you,” even though he knows it’s unlikely. Silence is often easier than expression because silence cannot be misunderstood or twisted. For a man, silence becomes the room his mind uses to reorganize itself because speaking up cost more than bleeding.

I have seen intelligent people destroy their careers by never learning to play dumb. Showing your full intellect in every interaction signals a threat to those above you. They will become defiant. They will resent you. Strategic ignorance, however, lets others feel superior. They relax. They reveal information. Then you are free to act on what you learned, while they underestimate you. Ask clarifying questions you already know the answer to. Intelligence is power. Hide it until deployment.

You will never get in fantastic shape by accident. OOPS - look at my huge arms and 6-pack. You will never get rich by accident. OOPS - look at my huge bank. It requires both PLANNING and EFFORT. One isn’t enough.
