A black Union soldier sits outside a slave auction house, Atlanta, GA, 1864... By this point, Union forces under William Tecumseh Sherman had captured the city, a major Confederate transportation and industrial hub. The presence of Black Union soldiers in the South marked a significant shift, formerly enslaved men were now serving in the U.S. Army following the Emancipation Proclamation. Buildings like this had been central to the domestic slave trade before the war. Their continued presence during Union occupation created stark contrasts between the old system and the rapidly changing reality on the ground. A collection with more than 300 Cartier watches will now go to market at Sothebys. Titled The Shapes of Cartier: A Dream Collection of Vintage Timepieces, the group is described by the auction house as the most comprehensive offering of its kind. The unnamed collector spent approximately 25 years assembling the collection, with a particular focus on pieces from Cartier’s historically independent Paris, London and New York branches. Made a trip to the valley for the livestock auction. Thought I’d pick up some bottle calves, but they’re selling for $1200/head so decided to pass. Pretty insane, seems fuel prices are driving cattle even higher, after already being at historic highs. Grocery store beef will be a luxury item in the coming weeks if this war isn’t wrapped up soon.
