No voices.

peeling the inside of my throat
like punishment I don’t argue with. I taste the end of us in it;

impossible to forget once it’s in your mouth. I don’t miss the fights.
The words that cut deeper
because they knew exactly where to land.
I don’t miss the way love rotted
right in front of us
and neither of us could stop it. But something claws at me,
not you,
not really,
just the ghost of what I thought we were. Twenty years
collapsed into a single second
that keeps replaying
like a bad decision I can’t undo. We stayed for the kids,
built something already broken,
called it survival
while it slowly buried us alive. Now it’s just me
and this room
that smells like regret and alcohol. No messages.
No “are you okay.”
No one coming through that door. I drink until the silence gets louder
than the memories,
and even then
they don’t leave. The bottle empties.
